how fast is our gearbox?
Hello folks,
Got my C63 on Wednesday and loving it so far. Love the sound it produces. Just curious, how fast is our gear box compare with dual clutch PDK, DCT, S tronic, and F1? I have been driving in Comfort mode and I am on the break in period so I didn't try S or M yet.

A range of
100ms in manual to 200ms in comfort someplace between the two in sport.

I am not sure about the actual speed in seconds or milli seconds but S is the quickest out of the three settings. I can only speak for myself but my run period consisted of some hard driving in all gear modes, my dealer told me to just refrain from redlining the car for the first couple of thousnad miles/kms.

Sport is
approx 30% faster than comfort since comfort is second gear start and M mode is supposed to be 50% faster so M mode at 100ms is the quickest
thats 1/10 of a second while not lightning quick like the Ferrari box plenty quick for a 3800 lb MB
put to scale 100ms is 3 time faster than the blink of an eye

I've been using M mode alot probably 50% since break in and it is faster than I thought it would be.
After hearing other complain about it, mine seems to shift instantly when I pull the paddles.
I can't really complain about M mode--maybe as I push thousands of miles on the car I will notice some delay, but for now I'm very pleased with the response

Next time your driving around put her in S and manaully downshift when coming to a light. Then switch to M and do the same. You will see the difference.

The only thing about M mode is that you have to anticipate your shifts so you don't hit the red line. Personally I like the S mode for straight line acceleration better and M mode on the track.

^^I thought I read here a while back that there is no such thing as a tune for the tranny--I vaguely remeber reading some arguement about such a tune and it was proven impossible--I could be wrong or things may have changed--I know MB can reset the software and this can sometimes make it start over at square one.
Anyone with knowledge please enlighten me!

Sorry but our Manual mode is no where near 100 ms. The MCT with its latest and greatest technology is the fastest Mercedes tranny ever developed and it only shifts as fast as 100 ms in Manual mode (only). All other mods are slower. My guess is that the regular 7g in the C63 probably shifts at 200 to 220 ms.

I finally had a good chance to drive hard on my C63 tonight. I think the gear box is just pure automatic. It's no where near as fast as DSG, PDK, DCT, F1. Oh well I guess the power and the sound makes up for it. S mode is a bit quicker but the down shifts are still slow imo, M mode is about the same. C is comfort. Don't get me wrong. I still like this sedan except the tranny box.

^ really? I find the M mode considerably faster than S for downshifts!
For what it is, I think our slush box does just fine by me (maybe it will get more sluggish as my TCU learns how to "adapt")
Plus, the reliability for this tranny as compared to some of the other do-hickies you listed is great.
I feel like I'm always hearing about those SMG, DCTs, MCT, etc having problems--our slush box is pretty bullet proof unless you're really modding the car.

how is our gearbox compare with other automatic transmissions?
7G is faster than Porsche's Tiptronic
7G is faster than BMW Steptronic ( not sure )
Let the list goes on ......

2009 C63
I know we're supposed to be biased seeing that most of us on here are probably M-B owners but I'm pretty disappointed with the C63 gearbox. It feels great for your typical luxury Benz but for an AMG (ie. sporty model), it shifts pretty darn slow compared to many other DSG or traditional slushboxes. The paddles are slow to respond as well.

To get an automatic to shift faster is mostly about clutch pack clearance and pressure. You have to give up comfort to get the fast shifts. Mercedes sets up most of the transmissions very loose on purpose to give lots of control over the shifts. If you tighten up all the clutch packs as tight as you can get them and then increase the pressures they will shift very fast. But this will cause mostly uncomfortable shifts is all other conditions. Not brutal but no Mercedes butter shifts. You have to give up something.
I have looked into doing a MCT swap also and as far as I can tell it would work with all the programming. All the parameters are in the tcu, we just code the tcu to the vehicle when it gets to us at work. The big problem is that all MCT parts have to ordered by a vin number. I ordered a MCT clutch using a car on the show room of my dealer. Had to jump through some hoops to get it to come in though. I do not know if they would of let me order a whole transmission. This may have changed though it has been a little over a year.
