Advice needed! Soon to be C63 AMG owner
Folks:
I know what y'all are thinking, why is there still a new owner of the old C63 when the new facelifted with MCT is coming along in a short while.
Key is, I can't wait for the short while... so I am taking on a CPO 2009 C63.
And here are my questions...
1) Tire wear: I am reading a lot about tire wear being a problem. Is it because the tires are stock summer performance and they are soft? I was looking on Tire Rack and seems like the Tread Wear rating on a lot of these "Summer Performance Tires" are UTQG 220-280. If I can get some with UTQG with 400-500 rating would tread wear be better? I was looking at a Goodyear and a Yokohama tire, they have UTQG 420 & 560, and has warranty to about 45K miles. Will the C63 will eat thru these tires in 9K-15K at some on MBWorld have claimed?
2) MPG: I was talking to a BMW guy, talking about M3 and trashing the C63 has poor mileage. He was saying M3 has about 350KM/tank, where as C63 has about 200KM/tank. I know real life driving is different and the MPG (L/100KM) figures are grossly inaccurate, but if HWY is 10.3L/100KM & City is 16.9L/100KM. Average them out, divided by the tank size (minus the reserve), I get about 400KM/tank. My question is, what are your real life experiences? I plan to use this as a daily driver, and don't plan on doing races or drags or burnouts on this car, so what is real? 200KM/tank or 400KM/tank?
3) Winter driving: I am from Canada, and prone to snow storms. Granted not bad as the mid-provinces (I am in Toronto). Anyone on the forum has had experiences with C63 in snow? If I slap on a set of snows will that suffice? Or must I get a beater for the snow? Now, I do understand that C63 is no 4x4 nor AWD, and I expect it to turn ESP when neccessary, is it bad to the point where ESP keep blinking or "within" expectation of a RWD car?
Thanks a bunch folks. Excited to join the forum!

2. M3 and C63 are awesome vehicles, but their mileage does not differ much in real life situations. We've had many members get over 20mpg on highways. The only reason we'd get a lot less mileage is because with the C63, WE LOVE TO MASH THE THROTTLE because it's fun and sounds badass. Tell the M guy to shove it.
3. Many owners in colder states and Canada enjoy their C63 in the snow.

4. Enjoy the car however you like it. You're the one who's paying the car note.

2. Who cares about the mileage?? This car is about performance. Period. Get it and love it, and enjoy the looks you get at the gas station! For what it's worth, I've gotten 340km on my first tank of gas. The light came on 15 km ago, and it stated that I had 80km until empty. For the record though, I'd still be loving every second of the car if I was getting 200km (but the BMW guy is an idiot for even suggesting that it would get only 200km per tank.)
3. I'm in Edmonton. No problems so far with snow tires (Michelin X-Ice2). I imagine anything more than 8-10 cm of snow would be tricky. Doable, but far from good. The second day I had it, had freezing rain all night. During my drive to work in the morning, I only had ESP light up a couple times despite it being a skating rink. It's ALL about throttle control.

1, It's a combination of carp trie + rear wheel drive + high toque. So if you drive normal in C mode most of the time, your tires should last at least 2000 miles.
2, I am getting about 250-260 ish miles per tank, and that's about 400 Km. But again I mostly drives cities so my millage might be a little on the low side.
3, I have yet to have a chance to test my C63 in the snow so I don't really know, but based on the experience of others, driving the C63 in snow with snow tires and / or chains should be fine. However, it will be better if you get yourself a beater just in case since you are from Canada.
Hope this helps,

Also, my former ride, the Mazda RX-8, also suffers from "crap oem tires" issue.

You should get at least 180 miles or 290km on your car. I drive a mix and always get at least 200 miles.
Regarding tires, I have Michelin A/S+ with the 45K warranty and I think I will be lucky if I get 15K out of them. Still better than 7K with the PS2.
We did not buy the car for its good gas mileage or tirewear.

My question exactly.... The Yokohama's I am looking at has a 5yr/45K mile warranty.
If the tire runs out at 15K, shouldn't we be looking at a warranty replacement?

I know the C63 is a performance car and some of you are avid drivers who does not care much for tire wear and/or gas mileage. Look at me as your everyday driver who demands performance on tap. That's why tire wear and MPG (L/100KM) is of a concern to me, as I look at the total cost of ownership as a package.

^I think all you get is a pro-rated adjustment towards your next
tire purchase.
Someone on here went through this process and basically got a
partial credit that would be applied to a new set of rear tires.
I'll see if I could find the thread.

I'm in Alberta - Loving mine as a daily driver- I drive approximately 12kms a day ... running around 18L/100km AVG. Winter traffic brings me up to 27L/100kms.
I need to fill up about every 250 kms. But ends up being 1.5x a week for me.

The P Zeros can be rotated left to right but obviously not front to back. It won't help much because the inside wears quicker due to the excessive toe in and changing sides has no impact.

What you get is a proration on your new set of tires. I know gator (originator of the thread above) did it successfully with his set that he bought and obviously tires could not be rotated.
I bought mine from Sears and they have assured me that they will honor the warranty even without rotation. We will see.

I myself have a question. Depressing the brakes will brake all 4 wheels. If you stepped on the gas while holding brakes, will it only lock the front breaks and let the rear wheels spin, resulting in a burnout? Or does it still put brake pressure on all 4 wheels with the brakes, but the rear wills will have the power to overcome the brakes?
