2012 W204 LED Taillight Retrofit DIY
#77
thanks for the heads-up -- i cancelled the order on the lights from the dealer and ordered them from parts.com -- gotta hate the $62 shipping, but still saved over $200 when you figure in tax from the dealer. should be here tomorrow and will install.

NA LED tails installed
So I received the NA version of the taillights and just installed them. Unfortunately, left side rear fogs are on, but right side are deactivated. Hope this helps.

In NA we are LHD so the rear left side lights when it is on. Be my guess why the left side fog is on and the right is not. In countries that are RHD the right fog lights up. This has to do with the way the car is set up from the factory. This indicates the side of the car that is toward the inside of the lane it is traveling in, the driver's side of the car or the side of the car that is passed when overtaking.

I'm not an expert electrician, but here's a thought....
Forgive me if it's retarded..
Would it be possible to replace the rear fogs with error free aftermarket LEDs, with built in resistors and then somehow breaking the bulb on them so that it doesn't light up? The purpose would be to utilize the resistors so that you don't get an error for faulty bulbs.
This would only work and make sense if and when your aftermarket error free LEDs burn out and the car doesn't produce an error.
Or maybe wire it with resistors so that there wouldn't be any errors and the light won't light up as well.
any thoughts??

btw, after firing up the car, I did get a message "check rear fog light" in the info display. just have to push OK and it would go away til the next time i turned the car on. for now it doesn't bug me, but i was already going to go into the dealer to have them remove the other messages -- correct tire pressure -- still there from when i got a flat) and service reminder message. i guess i'll ask them to try to turn off the rear fogs and see what happens...

Guys I just retrofitted these 2012 tail lights onto my 2009 C63, they are plug and play so you DON'T get any fault lights or messages. As said, the only thing you need to do is reprogram the 4 rear fog lights to be off. I still didn't reprogram them but with all honesty they don't look bad with the fogs on, trust me, you will never regret it even if you don't end up programming the fogs!!
So, why does one person have error/faulty messages and the other doesn't?
Can anyone else that did this retrofit please let us know if you have faulty/error messages?

Are the indicators on the US one, red or amber? Also did I miss a post? I tried the part number from the first post in the picture on parts.com and it didn't work?

I wanted to offer that I could recode anyones rear sam for the light functions if the sam was sent to me. I would have to coordinate this with another vehicle locally to use. This would require your vehicle to be down while it was in shipping and I was working on it. It would only take me a day if I had a vehicle to use. You could also get a new sam and have the dealer code it to your vehicle and then send it to me for recoding the lights. I can not do it the other way or I am pretty sure that when the dealer coded it the light functions would be returned to normal for the U.S. PM me if this sounds interesting to you. If there is enough interest I could simply rent a c class for the day to do coding on multiple sams at once.

Another problem I noticed on my NA version lights (sans recoding): the intensity of the left brake light when activated is less than the right brake light, maybe not on at all... I highly doubt those bulbs come burned out brand new. The turn indicators are red, which surprised me b/c the old set had yellow/orange ones. Do you know if the brake light intensity can be adjusted in addition to shutting the rear fog?

You have to find a guy who has the equipment and program to encode the tailights (I think the program is called STAR). Once you turn off the rear fog, the brightness will adjust itself.
Ask DOME for help, he was the first one to do it.

Just picked up a 2010 Steel Grey with 6k miles - would LOVE to do this mod. Add me to the list to have whipplem104 do a group of recodings at the same time!
Is the SAM easy to pull?
