Cloud of blue smoke at start up???

My car is a 2011 C63 with only 4K miles on the clock. Ever since brand new, it occasionally spits out a lingering cloud of blueish colored smoke at start-up. It goes away once I start driving, but I'm still wondering if this is normal.

Anyone else get this?

I believe blue smoke means that there's an oil leak.

Normal.

It happens to me on occasion when I try to start the vehicle a few minutes after shutting it down. I think it has to do with unburnt fuel in the exhuast. Not 100% sure though.

Blue smoke is usually associaed with oil but it would be continouos blue smoke not just at start-up.

A few years ago there was a thread on this issue that seemed to indicate it was commonplace on newish C63's, and most were still relatively low mileage cars back then. Mine did it on startup perhaps half of the time then around 8k miles it suddenly stopped and I have never seen it again.

I can also confirm a small amount of white smoke upon start-up; IF my car has been sitting a couple of days.....but if I have been driving it daily, doesn't happen.
from what I gathered by talking to the indy shop I used, (spoke to the owner)
it's kind of normal during these colder months and shouldn't be an issue....unless it
continues to blow smoke after driving a few minutes.....
I am of course referring to my AMG......with just over 5K on the ody

Hey Eric!

blue is oil.
black is fuel.
white is water.

The question is: how is oil making it into the cylinder to get burned up?

How big of a cloud?

Hey Paul, what's up buddy.

No idea how the oil makes it up in there, but can say the car runs like a champ, makes strong dyno numbers, and doesn't seem to burn excessive oil. I'm stumped.

Nothing to worry about, as this is normal. It does happens on cold start ups, as my C63 does it on occasions. It's caused by oil getting into the combustion chamber, either pass the rings or thru the crankcase ventilation tube connected to the intake plenum.

Check out that Weistec oil catch can thread. Did you see how much oil the guy was getting in the canister? Perhaps you are getting oil in your intake manifold and its being burned off at start up?

Possible oil leak.
Blue smoke represents oil.

I won't get too excited if it's only on cold starts and it just a puff that lasts a second. It's a big azz motor and some oil is bound to sneak into the cylinders after you shut it down. When new some of these motors go through a quart every 1k until the rings all seat up. Mine is now using about 1 quart every 2,500 miles. So some oil is being sucked into the cylinders while you drive you just don't see the blue smoke since its a small amount of oil.

Mine does it too, intermittently.
I've got 5000 miles on it.
I guess this is part of the reason our exhaust tips get black so damn fast.
I spent two hours getting them like mirrors during my last detail and after a couple drives you'd never know I cleaned them

Not to worry . The smoke is oil getting past the rings. Your rings are not fully run in . Remember we're running oil the consistency of water, plus MB no doubt runs "loose" piston -bore clearances knowing how most will run the car to 7500 rpm.

My car smoked a lot, but now at 16K I seldom see white smoke at start-up. Also if you cool your car (e.g. to wash it ) and then only pull into the garage you are more likely to see smoke on start up. Only worry if you see clouds on acceleration (rings)or on overrun down a hill (valve guides/seals). IMO

Blue smoke cloud on start up.

My 2012 C63 AMG spits out a blue smoke cloud on start up when my car has been standing for a day or two. This being a big engine some oil might find its way up into the cylinder when the engine is shut down. Milage is now 37,000KM

I've red here that it is quite normal should I be concerned?

If its just a puff of blue smoke only on start up, and you're not experiencing excessive oil usage, don't worry it's normal. Just make sure you get to oil operating temp before you start to flog it.

Blue smoke on a cold start is oil. if it’s just on start up you May have some oil migrating into the cylinders after shut down through the valve stems. A compression and cylinder leak down test will let you know if this is a little problem (normal wear over time) or a big problem (failing rings). How much oil is lost per 1,000 klicks.

have not added oil for 8000 Kmart after the lost oil change.

I’ll go for the compression and cylinder leak test.
is the motor oil for high mileage cars worth it ?

blue smoke at start up

A good way to check for bad rings is as follows: Accelerate to about 70 mph or faster, then take your foot off the gas pedal and let your engine slow the car down.
When you get down below 50 mph, floor it and look in the mirror. If a burst of blue smoke comes out, it's probably worn rings. If blue smoke comes after waiting at traffic light,
it could be bad valve guides.
