Alright. We picked up out C63 on Thursday and love it, spent a good chunk of the day detailing it on Friday.... noticed the rear wheel wells have an almost carpet lining in in them... what is that all about?

Yeah I know exactly what your talking about. Comes standard. It's obviously not carpet but it does and almost feel exactly like it! I believe it's something far from that but it's put there for reducing noise.

I thought the same thing but after 18000kms it holds up really well - wears a hell of a lot better than the tyres!! Only minor complaint would be that if you are a detailing freak the carpet seems to attract leaves and twigs etc that can be a bit fiddly to get rid of when cleaning the car

It's to reduce the noise from all of the rubber flying off your rear tires
I believe all MBs have this, I know all of the ones I've owned do.
And yes it's sound deadening material and a ***** to keep clean!
