500whp dyno was false alarm ...bummer!!!

So after my surprising 500whp dyno pull at MD Automotive last week, I had a chance to re-visit my usual shop (Specialty Z in Chatsworth, CA) yesterday afternoon to verify the results. As expected, the numbers were lower but proved amazingly consistent with my last pulls done here. Again the best pull came in at 472whp/430wtq SAE corrected.

I was a bit disappointed to see absolutely no gains from the addition of the ROW airboxes, however the fact that I put down the same numbers as last time in considerably warmer temps (about 85 deg F here yesterday) suggests they may have helped a bit. Regardless, I'm very happy to have a safe, reliable, consistent 470+whp/430+wtq car on my hands. Based on other dynoject graphs I've seen, I think that's right where my power should be for my mods.

Happy to say that I'm done dynoing for a while and now it's time to focus all my efforts on track performance.

I wouldn't be bummed. Your car is making some serious power. It was a good test that showed how some dyno's can read differently even with the same car.

Not many people would go to the trouble that you have. I appreciate all the testing.

I'm willing to bet if you go back there in similar conditions(temperature) the numbers will be higher with the ROW boxes.

Thanks guys for the encouragement. I agree, enough with the darn dynos. It's time to make this car a track beast.

Now how can we get a successful private track event organized around here?!?!

I knew something was up with that dyno

Still good numbers. Around 560 Hp at the crank is nothing to frown about!

Yeah, after dynoing I did some online research expecting to find a lot of information on this dyno with all the Edmunds.com testing done there. I found that the dyno results for many new production cars tested there came in surprisingly high when considered against manufacturer advertised crank hp.

Bottom line, if you're in Southern CA and looking for dyno bragging rights, MD Automotive in Westminster is the place to go. If you're looking for real-world, consistent results, go to Specialty Z in Chatsworth. Personally, I prefer the latter.

I'm pretty sure Eric's car is making more than 560 at the crank

Eric just dont ask to be dyno'd on our mustang dyno then... we've been seeing roughly 12-20% lower readings then a dynojet

Wow! So safe to say that if I can break the 150whp mark at your shop then I've got a strong car.

Actually I have to agree with Jacob. Using the usual 18% drivetrain loss, 472whp/0.82 = 575hp crank

well, how about you do it. according to your %18 (which is only an estimate and not a solid and accurate number) drivetrain loss

560*0.18= 100.8

560-100.8 = 459.2

so you are saying that Eric's car is making 459.2, when he is actually making 472

Get this car on a DynoMaha (same dyno used to rate MB cars from Germany with a C63 rating of 457HP) and I gurantee you will see this car making close to 600HP

As long as your realistic about the results and use it as a tool, that never really gives you great comparisons unless its same day then dynos are great

Honestly i could care less about the dyno numbers, i use our dyno for data logging in a safe environment, and to tune. If all we wanted was power numbers we would have went with a dynojet and saved a ton of money. But like to said comparisons need to be apples to apples.

I wouldn't discount the ROW boxes, any power they might make would only be on a moving car

As I've said before, A dyno is only a good tool that can be used a base line for mods, I’ll be heading back to the same dyno that Eric and I used to see how much the removal of my cats and new xpipe will make.

I know that dyno will read higher but if Eric’s car did 500 rwhp with xpipe and no cats and mine did 489 with cats and no xpipe, then if I break the 500 rwhp mark I would know maybe it will be around 475 to 480rwhp....
Eric , Also keep in mid how cool and dry the weather was, too many thing that can change from dyno to dyno. When my wheels and tires are done lets go to Willow Springs.. I don’t even really care much for the 1/4 mile thing but I will make a few passes in Fontana if you’re up to it...

Also guys Andy-MHP may come to California to do a custom tune for anyone who is interested, if so let me know and
I'll arrange it...

Hurry up and get back to that dyno Ramin...I'm dying to see what your latest setup puts down! And to compare cars in real world conditions, how about you join us at the Airstrip Attack private rental on Feb 25. We could cruise up together and I'm sure it will be a blast.
