And as a FYI canada is part of north America.

The answer is, because they could not afford to pass crash tests for multiple versions.

they apparently didnt want to crash test non-sunroof cars as most came with them and it wasn't justified based on cost, I hate sunroofs but hate heavy glass panoramic roofs even more

I am having the pano ripped out and a full carbon fiber roof installed. It's only about $4000 and had it done on my CLK Black Series(was not a pano) and looks awesome and removes some weight from the highest part of the car. An absolute must have modification IMO.
