Here’s a picture of the old head bolts and new head bolts. They are obviously different. The issues seem to be metallurgy of the old bolts which after many expansion and contraction cycles fail by snapping. MBZ is aware of the problem and is using the new head bolts in engines after 0060658. As the heads of the bolts are different you could pull a valve cover to confirm which bolts you have.

OK, PM with appropriate referenced threads has been sent to the mods above to ask for; a) merging of recent threads regarding coolant loss and head bolt failure, and b) pinning said thread on the C63 forum as a sticky. We shall see...

Bhamg. Thanks for undertaking this. I have a sense we're in for a battle with MBZ.

I assume the bolt on the right is the old design as it is the used bolt.

One failed head bolt and another with corrosion, definitely sounds like a metallurgy issue. I'd love to swap them all out with ARP fasteners and be done, but I'm sure that'd void any warranty.

IIRC someone posted that their car fell into the "old head bolt run" and it was a MY2010. I think they said that...

When dealer replaced the intake manifold gaskets, someone mentioned that they replaced the bolts with newly designed ones. Are these head bolts? or some other bolts?

Probably torque to yield bolts on the intake manifold. Which can only be used once.. They use these on the tranny pan too, you have to buy new bolts when you flush it.

This is correct. Any torque to yield bolts can only be used once. If you have a head bolt break they will replace all the head bolts with the new design head bolts.

No, all engines up to Engine #15698560060658 are at risk according to the information given in this thread.

I believe so since the engine range cutoff is early/mid 2010.

Was thinking of buying an used C63, thinking twice about that now. Is there some way to easily check if a 2010 C63 was built after MY2010? Man i feel bad for anyone trying to sell a c63 that's built prior to MY2010, their re-sale value probably just went down by at least 5000 dollars. I am hoping MB USA knows about this.

The sure way to check is the engine ID# which any dealer can give you if you have the VIN#.

I have a very early build 2011 P31 C63. I have asked my dealer to get my engine number for me. I will post it when I get it.

My CDN 2010 is affected and 10602 M156 engines built after mine.

Does anyone know if the engine code started at 569XX 60 000000?

On the positive side, I doubt that every single engine below the target VIN will break. Only some will and I know we can't foretell which ones those will be.

I think the best option for those affected is to purchase extended warantee and/or ask MB if this will be covered post warantee period.

Update on my Car. MB says it not the head bolts. Requiring a full engine strip down to determine whats wrong. No help yet from MB Aus on the cost of this though it seems like some sort of catastrophic failure which I do not think should have occurred on a 3.5 year old 51K KM motor serviced on the dot by MB themselves. The Service Tech says he has not seen a similar type of failure! Will know more on Monday.

Best of luck with the repair morganb. My M5 required an engine replacement just out of warranty also. Different problem, similar situation, it required a complete teardown, a new long block and numerous other parts as well. In my case the resolution of the contributions to the cost of the repair took two minutes to resolve - we decided on 1/3 factory, 1/3 dealer and 1/3 mine. Although that ended up costing me into five figures I thought it to be eminently fair and was pleased all parties agreed to the settlement so quickly....having no hard feelings about it on anyone's part was good thing!
