Dumb question-CPO:What is the real benefit?

Hi guys

Can you explain me what is the difference between a CPO and a normal used car? Since I'm still on the look for a used C63, and since I saw several C63's already, I would like to know better the benefit of a CPO program. Does a CPO really make sense even if the car will be more expensive if I compare it against a non-CPO C63 (used)? The MB website does not help me at all... I need a feedback from actual C63 owners.

Extended warranty is the only advantage I can see going CPO.

What he ^ said. Plus. if the tires have less than 6/32 on them they will be replaced. If the brake pads have less than 20% wear left they will be replaced (usually rotors too). Plus if you like warranties, you can buy the extended factory warranty on a CPO car. Most dealers will not CPO a car that has body/paint work other than the bumper covers or paintless dent removal.

It's all about piece of mind

with a CPO car from mercedes, you know that the inspection has been accurately done and that when you invest in this considerable amount of pocket change, the car will function as it should. IMO it is definitely worth going for

I might be part of the minority here, but I don't see any cost/benefit from going CPO. MB CPO only adds 1 additional year to the warranty for 3k, while you can get 2-3 additional years from just buying a extended warranty plan. The argument about tires being under 6/32 being replaced is moot. Any conscientiousness buyer will negotiate the price based on the condition of the vehicle. Your CPO car isn't going to be worth any more in terms of resale value to the next buyer if you have no warranty left on the vehicle. It's just peace of mind to those who have no ideas about cars and just want comfort in knowing that MB said this used car is OK to buy.

That's good information guys. I didn't know they would be replacing tires or pads if they had a certain wear... Thank you!

The key is the extended warranty, it's the MB Extended warranty, not 3rd party. It's a crap shoot if you get good coverage with 3rd party.

CPO cars automatically get the additional 1 year/100,000 mile. After that, you qualify to buy the MB Pre Owned Extended Warranty, which adds an additional 1 year/120,000 mile, or 2 year/135,000 mile.

If you buy a non CPO car, you can't even buy any extended warranty from MB. Only current original owners can purchase the extended warranty, and that's during the warranty period with a CPO like inspection by the dealer.

If you don't care about warranty or go 3rd party, then yes, CPO isn't worth it at all.

When your spending over 45k for a used car. Its a good idea to pay a little more for CPO. You want that peace of mind and extra warranty.

Bought mine CPO and the car had a few small cosmetic things like a cracked lower front grill that the dealer fixed for me after taking delivery of the car. You wont get that kind of treatment from a private party sale.

True! My wheels had minor scuffs. But was fixed as new. As it stated on the service history. CPO is the way to go.

in Canada, extended warranty actually gives you 2 additional years right away. you can then buy a third year if you want.

So a CPO car will give you a min of 6 years after first registration. imo its a good deal regardless if you think you know cars or not. A transmission breaking down after 1 year of use isn't something you can predict or see. It's happened to me before and that 10k fix was fully paid for by MB canada.

I was making the statement under the presumption that the choices were either private party or CPO. If you were to purchase private party, you always have the option of having the original owner purchase the MB extended warranty prior to the sale. All things equal, that makes more sense to me than to purchase a CPO vehicle. It's really up to the purchaser to decide what they are most comfortable with.

1. the CPO extra one year warrranty is NOT the same level of waranty as new. It covers MOST things, but not all. For example, the plastic trim around my seat floor brackets had cracked and fallen apart with only 32,000 miles on the clock. Not covered. Also, the plastic trim on the inside of the trunklid had a good sized stress crack in it. Not covered.

2. While the paint on my front bumper looked fine, it began to come off in patches. It's clear that whoever did the work didn't prep the bumper right before painting it. Should CPO have caught this? Maybe, maybe not.

It's not a bad thing and it has value... to a point.

i would just like to point out that a CPO is still a crap shoot. there have been other threads at every vehicle forum i have been a member of (including this one) where a CPO had a major problem that was not covered,

Keep in mind any reconditioning the dealer does to the car is getting added to the cost. Brakes, Tires, etc. are not just included in the CPO cost they are in addition to it.
CPO is a good thing but if its possible to buy from an owner who has the max Extended Limited Warranty and it transfers to you, thats excellent also.
Non CPO from a non-MB dealer might leave you without good exteneded warranty options.

I bought a CPO C55 and the extended MBZ warranty on top of that. During the extended warranty period the drive shaft failed damaging both the rear diff and tranny. Everything was covered. The service advisor showed me the total cost which exceeded $7K. Without the CPO I could not have purchased the MBZ extended warranty. Considering the two thread discussion head bolt failure, a CPO and extended warranty start to look like even a better bet.

CPO wont cover everything your traditional manufacturers warranty will cover.
I had a CPO C32 which had numerous faults in it. It should have never been CPO. It was in a front end collision, had new bioxenon headlights which werent an option on the car, and a NAV unit from Mbenz NL. I doubt they did anything to certify it. The only plus was the extra year on the warranty.

Back then MB had free maintenance but it did not carry over to the extra year. That's when i learned to do it myself.

CPO definitely has advantages over 3rd party extended warranties, but CPO isn't perfect either, as many have said above.

One of the major benefis of the CPO warranty, however, is that it is independently administered by the dealership, so if you have a problem with the car (which is covered), there is no need to call for approval from the outside warranty provider when you bring it in to have the repairs made.

Still, it is a very good idea to ask for a detailed explanation of what is and isn't covered under ANY warranty program.

A good reason is if the block fails... you dont have to shell out 50k+ to fix it.

Wouldn't it be more economical to pay for an inspection and then buy a Mercedes ELW?

Typically CPO is the way to go.

When a 4 year old car has 50k miles, it'll have better chances to sell with a higher resale value if its factory covered for another couple years and anopther 50k miles or more.

Its pretty simple.

Whatever you do get a warranty; CPO + max ELW from dealer or max ELW from previous owner.
An AMG engine failure costs more than the whole car.
