where does the headbolt issue end again? I'm a 2010 and I know that it was a "crossover" year for the headbolts. How do i know if i'm in the risk category!?

Well, if I have followed the thread in its entirety, because I knew I had a car which was built right on the bubble, I went ahead and setup the EPC online account, which is rather full of good technical stuff. I found out I have engine serial ending in 60711, so safe by a mere 53 engines...

For reference, I have a 2011 C63 built in 06/10 per VIN tag.
Makes me feel better when I hit the engine later today.

By the way, I see much longer tire life if I constantly drive in manual mode (prefer to use the gear console lever shifter). The automatic gear box changes must be what is wrecking the tyres.

Looks like the EPC online website also lists all manufacturers notes and small recall notices. Have you guys taken the car to the dealership with the notes to get hoses and small stuff fixed as well? I am thinking about discussing this with the dealer next service.

Anyone know how much it would cost to replace the head bolts as a preventative measure? Is it better to get the new MB head bolts or just to save up and get the Weistec ones.

ALL 2008-2010 are affected by the head bolt. May be your washer fluid?

Hello,

I have a 2007 CLS63, so I know I'm in the range. I've got about 66K miles. The car was shipped Oct. 2006, so less than 9K miles per year.

I've had a number of "check engine" issues over the past year, but the head bolt problem never came up- at least not with the dealer or private mechanic.

I had a fuel pump replaced- car smelled like gas, last year. I had a camshaft sensor replaced more than one year ago.

This year, I was told (check engine light) that my intake manifold gasket needed replacing, and there were three broken bolts- but I believe these were intake manifold bolts. I hit a pit of metal (fell off a truck?) on the freeway that came through my bottom grill- I don't know if this was related.

Most recently, I had the check engine issue. My car is currently at FJ Newport Beach. I'm told that I need a camshaft solenoid. My oil sub pump is leaking.

Anyway, are there any early signs of the head bolt issue? I've never had the coolant problem.

Do we know what the actual incidence is of head bolt failure, i.e., it's been X% of m156 engines thus far (give or take some variance)?

What I'm trying to determine is, should I hire a private mechanic to replace my head bolts preemptively, or should I just get rid of this car (it's cost me about $5K in repairs just this year)?

Otherwise, the car still drives well and has never stranded me, but the potential for this head bolt problem is bothering me since I'm sure it's very expensive.

Yes, the cams need to be removed to expose the bolts.

Subscribed, I will soon be the owner of a 09 E63 and am a bit worried about this issue as well. I'm curious of the actual percentage of cars in the effected range which actually develop an issue. Given the hype, it would seem there would have been a recall.

I bought my 2007 CLS63 at Fletcher Jones in Newport. I just had my car there last week for my third check engine issue in one year. Each time, it's been a big expense, as I mentioned in my last post. I had three "broken bolts" replaced in March of this year, but I don't think they were head bolts. It was done at a different dealer and it was done at a time when I had the intake manifold gasket replaced. It was expensive, but not expensive like head bolt labor would be. I'll have to follow up with them to see exactly what they did.

Anyway, to sort of answer my own question, I brought up the head bolt TSB to the service advisor, and he said, if I ever did have a problem they would submit a goodwill request to MB to possibly cover it.
