Help with CEL code P228F

Looks like this has something to do with fuel pressure. Any ideas? I tried to search but I'm on my phone and my googlefu is limited at the moment.

Looks like your fuel pressure was too high.

I cleared the code and it went away, came back on about 35 miles later after stopping for coffee. Is it something wrong with the gas or my car?

Do we even have a fuel pressure regulator in our cars? I would think so and that's the first place I'd look for an issue.

@drawde

Don't think so. If it was bad gas I think you would have triggered a too lean code.

How is driveability?

I've driven about 70mi since the light first came on yesterday (35mi going home yesterday, [cleared code] then another 35mi coming to work today [code came back]), no noticable driving issues.

I shot off an email to the dealer, they're usually good at getting back to me.

My concern for now is if it is safe to drive with? Tomorrow is my only free day until next week, if they can't fit me in then it'll have to wait. Is my tank going to blow up?

I wouldn't worry about it too much if the car is running normally. Some possible culprits like a restriction in your fuel lines or a clogged fuel filter would seem very unlikely.

I don't want to jinx myself but I think the CEL went away on its own. I can't really think of anything I did other than running the gas task pretty empty (not on purpose), but when I left work the other day it started up with no light and it still hasn't returned.

Not at home so cant check brochure - is there an actual "CEL" warning or is it just the picture of the engine on the bottom left of the dash in yellow? I just want to make sure I'm not confusing two things. The engine symbol warning light came on last night and was going to get some different gas before I run it to the dealer.

Thx

I got the same error. After my initial trip to the dealer to reset the code, the mechanic noted that it would affect gas mileage, and it might run a little rich, but should not have any negative effects long term.

Hey Pat I have a code reader you can borrow if you wanna pull the code, you're not too far.

But in any case I'm not sure but I remember reading somewhere that as long as the light isn't flashing and it's driving OK you don't need to rush too much.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

A flashing CEL is usually a more serious issue.

Thanks man - so on my way to dealer Friday I decided Id fill up and see what happened. CEL went away once I started my engine - drove to CT this weekend and all was fine until yesterday, when the CEL came on again. Filled up again and the light is still on - so I guess I'll bring it in. Everything seems to be running fine, and since it went away the first time I figures its something to do with gas, gas cap or tank.

I do not have a picture at the moment, but I used insulation tape on the y diverter pipe going into the right emissions control device thing (I forget its name, there are 2 silver circular things to the left of the oil filter housing with pipes going into them).. My check engine light went off immediately after I started my car and has not come back on since this morning. Previously, I noted that CEL would go on and off randomly over a week period or so.. I have the part on order, so I will keep an eye on it when I replace it.

It had a tear in the pipe letting air in (or vapor our), but caused a pressure variation, which was the CEL I was getting.

My CEL is off again now - I really don't want to bring it in with my aftermkt wheels on. If the light isn;t on, can I assume it is ok?

Aftermarket wheels will have no bearing on whether or not they do warranty work on your vehicle. If the CEL keeps going on and off, you have an issue. Take it in and get it looked at, there is no reason not to.

Oh no - I dont want them test driving my car with the 19s - or damaging them. The roads are bad near the dealership - i usually bring my car in when I have the stock 18s on bc i dont care about them

Are you getting the same code I was? The problem for me was a rail sensor and "something" wrong with the fuel computer or module.. Everything was covered under warranty for me (extended 3rd party warranty if that matters).. The rail sensor was changed out I believe but I'm not sure what was done with the fuel module, whether or not it was changed out or replaced or just talked sweetly to.

I believe this error is generic to the fuel line system from start to end. Any issues within the system will cause pressure problems (either too high or too low). I figured out my problem was a small y diverter hose that had split causing a pressure loss, I used insulation tape to wrap it temporarily, the light immediately went out. I picked up the part (around $7) on Tuesday and will be installing it this weekend.
