My wife hated her black car...its not black anymore

Hey Guys,

So like the title says, my wife hated that her SLK was black. Unfortunately, the only non black SLK55 in the country was in LA and was 12K more than what we payed sans the shipping costs. If she wanted the car, it had to be black. I was doing a little research on wrapping the car and came across plastidip. I found a youtube video of a guy named Fonzie using plastidip on the entire car After digging around a little more, I see he runs a company named plastidipyourcar dot com and he seems to have perfected this method. I noticed that the company was located near me in Coral Springs FL, so I decided to give them a call. I brought the car over there and they showed me some examples of their work and explained how the company began. The guys that work there are top notch, they made me feel completely comfortable about the process and I never felt pushed to give it a try. After finding out that the cost would be 1/4th of a wrap and it is fully reversible, I decided to give it a shot. I dropped the car off and waited anxiously for the results. Well, here they are. Oh, and they will be coming out with a satin finish in a few months. I might try that on the C.

I'm curious about the longevity and durability of the finish.

Omg you plasti dipped your brand new slk55?

Plasti dip looks too cheap to be used as a paint finish IMO

To me it looks exatcly like a vinyl wrap.

Comparison - the C63 is wrapped matte black

my wife bananas! :D
So how does the wife like it?

I think it might be one of those that look better in person than in pictures... the quarter view looks flat to me but I'm sure it is sweet irl.

I am also interested to know how it holds up. Also, how much approx did it set you back?

Pictures just don't do it justice. Its actually grey in person and does have more of a satin look than flat. I'm told it should lighten a few shades after it fully cures. My wife loves it, she told me today that people have been giving her thumbs up at traffic lights. One guy even asked her if its a black series The finish looks really good up close, my neighbor thought I purchased a new car because it looks factory. I'm telling you, if you have been thinking about a wrap give this a try first, as its inexpensive and easily removed. I will let you all know how it holds up.

I parked my wrapped car beside a plasti-dipped car....

I would never do it to my car after knowing the difference.

I do agree, it doesn't feel as nice as a wrap.

When you wash it, doesn't the mitt stick to it? I remember when my grille was plasti-dipped, the micro-fiber wash mitt would get snagged on it, and have the little green fibers all over it.

Yes, that would be a problem. They gave me a shammy to use and said it works great. Only time will tell.

You must really love your wife to do that to a perfectly nice and new car.

That I do, but I honestly wanted to see how it would come out as well. I really dig it. But its not for everyone. So far all the feedback in person has been great. I drove the car a little tonight and got a few smiles and thumbs up, especially at the gas station.
