Project Car Opportunity

Hi Guys,

I was offered an interesting opportunity recently but am undecided on whether the offer is a good one. For those of you that dont know my situation, Im 22 and saved for years to afford my C63. Im still in school and find spending money on my car tight even though I would love to spend money on my car if I could. A friend of mine works at Sports Car Boutique in Toronto and offered me the opportunity to be a shop project car for them. I love the idea I just have some concerns and would like your guys input. Number one concern is I dont know if Im getting a reasonable deal with pricing. I dont want to give away confidential information in terms of pricing so I did blank it out. (PM if that information would let you help me) To put it in perspective I think I can get many of the vorseinter parts cheaper from buying at other shops in the States. I was planning on spending around 5K for wheels next year anyways so Im not concerned with that. What concerns me is the additional $4K that Im going to end up spending on the remaining parts. The other thing that concerns me is the commitment of being a project car. I have access to other cars to drive if my car is needed I just dont want to feel like Im giving my car away for the summer months.

You should find out where the "Events" are and get a full listing of how many shows before you commit. Especially if they are cross country or out of country.

My car club was sponsored and the official Team Bridgestone North America for 5 years. I know how all this stuff works first hand.

We got 4 sets of tires free a year and had a 100K budget (12 show cars). We didn't have to pay a cent (Hotels, gas, show admission etc etc)

Contracts are binding... Make sure you come out on top. It's hard when you have school at the same time.

Ask yourself this: if I bought the parts myself and had some shop do the installs that I can't, how much would I save? Sounds like cost is your #1 concern and if you're not getting a good deal, why volunteer for all of the extra commitment? Why can't they source the parts from the US and pass the savings on to you?

After getting pricing they really gave me a much better deal than I had initially expected. I am accepting the deal. I will have the full vorsteiner package installed next year -I am very excited!

The commitments include:

- Photo shoots
- A few car shows
- SCB has a racing contract racing Porsche GT3s so my car will accompany these cars at the races

Cost was a concern but they gave me a much better deal and the total package costs a lot less than I had though. I had assumed % off retail, but it was actually a % off their cost for the parts. As for commitments I dont have very many commitments since Im young and have access to other cars to drive if mine is needed.

Im actually so excited to have this opportunity since I wouldnt be able to afford these parts otherwise! Ill be sure to post many pictures as everything is getting installed.

Okay then, I'm glad it worked out. Best of luck with the build and I hope you keep us informed with a build thread or something.

Congratulations on the sponsorship! If they include tires in the deal, than that would be very well worth it.

Vaclav, congrats on the sponsorship... but if I were you, I wouldn't do it. The only winner is the shop cuz they are using your car as free advertisement... and still make money or break even in the cost for parts. The deal might sound good now, but you will end up paying for some mods you won't need at the end. Plus, cross your fingers they don't "rice out" your car. LOL

Thanks for the inputs guys. This is a response I received when I made my concerns clear;

Don't be concerned. You don't really have to attend any Races but MAYBE
Lemans Weekend in July, but we would like to have your car at our Shop from
time to time if we have an Event at the Shop to Showcase your car. Also if
we do any Event likes Sportscar Show, Importfest and Cars & Coffee and maybe
a Concours Event or two... We would like to Showcase your car there as well,
that all there is really to it. Also we will Have to do a Photo shoot once
the car is Ready.

I am backing out of this offer for the simple fact that I dont want to give up control of my car. You guys gave a lot of good insight and I really got to thinking. I believe I can get the parts in time as I save up more money and wont have to make any commitments. That being said this wont stop me from putting money on my car and getting some high quality parts!

Wise decision Vaclav!! Mod your car the way you love it, 1 mod at the time as long as you need to do it. You will be much happier with the end result than having to roll on 20's chromies... LOL
