Just more confirmation on the C63 going to a C45 AMG
I know we spoke about this a few months ago, but here is more confirmation on the 4.0L TT 8

New W205 C63 AMG to get a downsized 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 with 450+ horsepower and all wheel drive?
Autocar UK reports that the new W205 C63 AMG will not receive the M157 twin turbo V8 found in all the new 63 AMG models. Instead, the new C63 is supposed to get a downsized 4.0 liter V8 with twin turbos. Spyphotos of the W205 C63 AMG testing were accompanied by reports of twin turbo V8 power under the hood but that was thought to be the M157. A V8 with turbos is under the hood, just seemingly not the one we were all thinking.
Autocar claims this new 4.0 liter powerplant is good for 450-600 horsepower depending on the state of tune which certainly makes sense. Mercedes can wait to see what BMW does with the M3 and then simply up the output. Considering that the new M3 will have a fairly small inline-6 motor, Mercedes and AMG will still have it outgunned even with a 4.0 liter V8.
This new motor is set to eventually replace the SLK55's M152 V8. The M152 is not a bad motor but it's a step back from the M156 V8 the C63 currently has. It would seem the M152 was simply a stopgap engine until this new motor came out which shows in its design which is simply the M157 5.5 liter Twin Turbo V8 used currently in the 63 AMG's just without the turbos. That also means without a lot of the fun.
Mercedes could give the C63 the M157. They could even give the SLK the M157. These comparatively lightweight cars in relation to the E, S, SL, etc., with the M157 though would eat everything else in the lineup alive.
This new motor is apparently confirmed in a quote form the LA Auto Show by AMG boss Ola Kallenius, "We’ve already had downsizing to 5.5 and sophisticated direct-injection technology – we’ll see more of that in the future. We’ve already gone down to 5.5 and that's the technological road we’re on."
So a 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 is not as exciting as a 5.5 liter twin turbo V8 but with all wheel drive and a dual clutch transmission it certainly will still have quite a bit of muscle.

Rumors are just rumors. I've always hated all the damn speculation that the media does at stages like this.
Once MB/AMG makes an official announcement, I'll start really caring. They've yet to truly let me down with any of their cars, so I'm not expecting that to change anytime soon.

i dont really care about displacement as long as the exhaust sound and low end torque remain in tact. those factors combined make 90% of the appeal of the c63. take away either and there are better vehicle choices out there imo for the same $$. it is a shame rumors seem to be leading to a 4.0 rather than the 5.5 though

why even bother if this is the case. next car will likely be CLS63, E63 or a non MB. of course, final judgement will be reserved for first hand impressions

Thank god you're not an AMG exhaust engineer...

My point is that engineers are often more talented, and prove wrong, those who say "can't"
Just sayin....

Two things make me doubt the validity of his article: DCT - was rumoured earlier for higher-end AMGs, but confirmed a no; AWD for 2014 - AMG has confirmed this is coming for the C class, but not for next year.

DCT isn't all that anyway. They're heavier and from what I understand have greater drivetrain loss.
None as far as I know can handle a lot of power either. I had PDK, one of the better DCTs, in my Porsche Turbo that had nothing more than a tune. I had several issues with the transmission. Including failing once during a run down the dragstrip. From 6 speed if you go exhaust on one then you've hit the limit of what the PDK can take. If you enjoy modding, DCT seems something you want to avoid.

I never said it wouldn't sound good. I said it would sound different than a large displacement V8. The engine does impact sound of the exhaust... yes the exhaust can be tuned but you can't work miracles... that is, if you like the sound of the C63 today, it will be different in the next C. Maybe you should modify your beliefs...
