Rubber seal on top of grille/front of air box

Hey all I have noticed in most pics and on my car that the rubber on either end of the cover on top of the grille, #7 in the link below. My question is why does this happen. I don't think they matter but it just bothers me when I look under the hood.

Yeah, my rubber is weirdly aligned as well from day 1... I don't know why it's that way though. I guess I can always remove the upper grill & re-align the rubber afterwards.

These are the pieces i am talking about, I have seen photos of them completely off. I assume they either fell off or were taken off

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I assume they get messed up due to the heat, but the question still remains why mb didn't use better rubber. Oh well.

I noticed one side of mine had started to split from very early on, I just assumed it had maybe got jammed when the bonnet - sorry - the hood closed. I agree it looks pretty tatty, tried glueing it but it fell apart pretty quickly

I was thinking to try and have it changed with warranty the next time I am due for service but that is not for another year as I recently performed my first 10k Service A.

old thread but i'm curious - do you mean the thin rubber strip between the hood and upper grill that screwed into the hood? if so, i noticed half of it is sucked in with the adhesive exposed so you can't even see the rubber from the front...and then the other half is very visible in that gap. i took it all apart but there was nothing i could do.

do you know if that rubber strip is available separately? i looked in the diagrams and couldn't see anything that was definitive. i'd LOVE to change it out.

Yep, mine is sticking out a bit on one side.. I'm not sure if the rubber is sold separately.. U can ask ur dealership parts department.

it's not, you have to get the whole piece. I had mine replaced and same thing happened. It's just weak and useless...

wow! that sucks. i'm about to remove it and make something better. i don't think it really matters if there is something there or not after studying that piece when i had the upper portion removed but it can't hurt.

i'll tear the flimsy piece off, use prep sol to remove the remaining adhesive and find something that is more robust and a bit thicker...and has adhesive on one side, lol.

Both on mine are messed up. I thought this was due to lack of care from the mechanics as i only noticed it when my car went for service! lol
Now i know its' maybe due to poor material.
