C63 AFE Filters / Charcoal Delete

Hi guys, interesting thread. I have two questions as I am looking for minor performance upgrades for my 2010 ML63:
1. What is the purpose of the famous charcoal filters?
2. What would be the purpose of removing them?
I have seem a decent amount of comments with or without CEL lights going off. Is it worth the hassle after all?
Hoping for some feedback with true facts. Thank you in advance!

no performance gain for me at all...didnt notice it get any louder either, but when i took my car to the track (c63s are notorious for over heating on the track), I think my car ran a little cooler(more air getting in maybe?) and didnt over heat like the last time I went. although I did do a OE tune and secondary cat delete as well so I cant tell if it is purely the CF delete

i switched to afe filters couple of days ago and my butt dyno does not feel any gain at all. maybe the engine breathes a little better now but doesnt translate into better performance on the street and no improvement in sound either.

Thank you for the input! Just as I suspected. I might leave the filters alone for right now and maybe go the "resonator delete" route. It might not provide HP gain but at least it will make the engine sound the way those AMG engineers wanted it to. I miss the bark of the C63.

I've been doing lots of research on all mods I've planned on. Heard horror stories on faulty filters and not warranteed by mb. Is 10 HP worth headaches and a giant repair bill? Safest bet is to get row airboxes for ~$500. This is solely my opinion.
