"You're going to jail for reckless driving"
Just got home from a drive -- I was out there just to clear my mind, listen to some music and drive around for awhile.
It was one of those nights where I was really feeling the car. I was listening to satellite and every tune was just bumping. It felt like somebody secretly tuned my car, the torque was just insane.
The roads were pretty empty and I was doing the stoplight to stoplight type runs. Nothing too crazy, probably had her up to 90 at times, but the roads were empty and I would break pretty hard to get rid of the squeaks.
Decided I was gonna take a run out to the casino and hopped on the expressway. For those familiar with Chicago, I was driving on clybourn and elston before I hit the 90/94.
Some guy in the lane adjacent to me tried to race me and I ignored him but the 3rd time he pulled up to me I said **** it and gunned it.
I wasn't looking at the speedometer so I have no idea how fast I was going but then I see the lights behind me and I look in the rearview and it's an unmarked car. For a few seconds I thought about not pulling over; figured I could call 911 and tell them that an unmarked car was trying to pull me over and ask them to get verification that this was, in fact, a cop. I've seen that fake cop pullover scam on 60 minutes or something and I didn't feel like getting robbed at gunpoint or letting some punk steal my car.
A few seconds later I decided to pull over mainly because on the off chance that it was a fake cop, I would take my chances. But the higher probability in the decision matrix was that this was an undercover cop and if I pissed him off by not pulling over he would definitely **** me over ticketwise.
So he comes up to the driver's side window dressed in street clothes and no badge. I debated asking him to see a badge but decided against it for the same reason that I decided against not pulling over.
"Your going to jail for reckless driving, but before I put you in handcuffs, do you have any idea how fast you were driving?"
"No sir, I really don't know."
"Are you drunk or high on drugs?"
"I'm really sorry officer, I just got a little carried away with the car..."
"You didn't answer my question?"
"No drinks or drugs, I'm really sorry officer."
"So what were you thinking driving like that, tell me that and then I'll cuff you and get your car towed -- your going to jail tonight, I got it all on video."
"I don't know what to say, I'm in shock."
"Where were you heading driving like this?"
"I dunno, nowhere in particular, I was just driving to clear my head."
"You don't have a license do you, it's been suspended for tickets."
"No, here's my license, no tickets since I've had this car."
"Registration?"
"Right here."
Now I've been in a holding cell once and it involved me being pulled over in my jetta 10 years back and now it looks like it's gonna happen again -- on my goddamm vacation.
"Look, I know how it is, I've got an SLR and I've done up to 140 on the highway .I just wanted to make sure that this was your car, I thought it was stolen, you were driving it like you stole it. I've been tailing you for the past 20 minutes."
"Oh"
"Yeah, now go on home and don't speed for the rest of the night."
"Thanks a lot officer, I almost **** my pants."
Okay, so now I know that I need to get a radar detector and laser jammer installed ASAP.
And I also need to take this car to the track, a place I have never been...
Anybody in Chicago up for going to the track?

That story reminds me of the time I strangled my first wife to death. When the officers arrived they ask me why I killed her and I told them that she was a bittch, unbearable and I just couldn't take her anymore. Fortunately these guys were also married and they told me they understood how something like this could happen. I thought it was pretty cool when they decided to let me off with just a warning.

SLR is pretty tough to believe but maybe he's one of those corrupt cops who knows. Next time if you feel like clearing your head do it at a track or take another vacation. There is no way a cop of any kind would have let you go with just a warning in California. If your story is true, be very glad you got lucky.

if he thought you stole it you would have been pulled out of the car at gunpoint, no time for discussion. and if he had an SLR he wouldn't be a cop. sounds like his real profession was lying.

Chicago cop, SLR????? No way....
If you are interested in tracking your car we have a track day at the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL in late April and a day at Road America in Wisconsin on May 11th.

You are lucky!! Chicago cops can be harsh sometimes I hope the next time I get pulled over its by this guy! I guess it makes sense, I have been stopped a few times by unmarked cars and they have not written me a ticket, they just tell me to slow down and go home. But a Chicago cop with a SLR?? Something seems off I would have to agree with Jim maybe he meant a SLK lol
I am ready for track day lets all get together and head out to the Autobahn club. I was thinking that we should get a group of guys together and maybe rent a drag strip for a day? Would you guys be interested in that? Does anyone know how much it would cost to do that?

I was in a state of shock so I guess it's possible he said "SLK"
He did say that I was lucky that his uncle owned a MB dealership in the suburbs and that he drove an SLR/K -- I assume meaning that he had access to that type of vehicle due to his family ties -- maybe he just borrows the car, I dunno...
Either way, the whole experience freaked me out.

I might be in over my head with you guys, I've got no track experience and you've got a blower...
Can I run it on my stock tires or would I need drag radials?

In my opinion there is a slight chance a cop can afford an SLR, but everything is possible.. Like OP said, his family owns a MB dealership or who knows, his wife might be millionaire (doctor, lawyer or such).
OP, kiss ur lucky star & do good merit as u got very lucky.. Not only for getting away from this "crime" (maybe cuz he didn't have a radar to nail u), but also for being alive to share ur story with us cuz god knows how fast u were doing. Next time, take it to the track in a controlled environment. Peace!!

I never saw a badge but if he wasn't a cop, he was a fantastic actor.
And his motive was not robbery or carjacking but just to **** around?
He did kinda look like drew peterson...
