Thoughts on using 19" AMG multi-spoke wheels for winter?

Am I crazy about thinking to use my OEM 19" multi-spoke wheels for winter? Looking at a set of summer rims/Michelin PSS and instead of having to track down a set of OEM 18s I might find some suitably sized 19" winter tires... I know its not optimal but I know quite a few guys on the M3 forum in Toronto running 19s in the winter. Just looking for some input and if anyone is doing it already...

It would be hard on the wheels but a good coat of sealant should make it alright. The only other issue is if you are mounting and unmounting tires each season as that can take its toll too... maybe even moreso. If you have a second set of 19s for the summer then I say why not!

In terms of traction, if you went with a 235 square set up, it would be no different than running 235/18 square IMO. It is all about wear and tear on the wheels if that matters to you... and a more limited selection of tire options.

Do it.
235 all around as mentioned before. The rear wheels will look a little funny (lots of wheel lip showing) but it is fine. Also, as mentioned before, you will need to clean them fairly often and try to seal them. Having more lip exposed means it is easier for salt to sit in between the tire and wheel and eat at the clear coat...because its a machined wheel, things will get nasty if the clear coat wears.
My brother runs his factory 19's all year with 235's all around on LM60's for winter...traction is no different then my 18's on 235 falken eurowinter all around...if anything, he has better traction with the 19" LM60.

Yeah I would be running a separate set of summer wheels/tires so would not be into mounting/unmounting the tires... would leave the winter tires on the OEM 19s in the off season.

Was thinking about maybe running 235/35 and 245/35 or even 255/35 for a bit of stagger... will have to see what winter tire options are out there. I ran 245/40/18 and 265/40/18 winter tires on my M3 with minimal issues, Toronto winters aren't really that bad.

Vise_,

I've ran my c63 e1 on original e1 19" black wheels this past winter in Toronto (which was a fairly long/hard one) - My wheels are perfect, I will find what tires I bought and give you the brand/model as well - car drove flawlessly all winter on them.

I am now however, buying summer wheels as it is not worth the trouble swapping the rims out each season imo.

Awesome, thanks man... let me know, was having some trouble finding tires that match the OEM sizes so would appreciate the info.

I always found that winter tires work best with a little more sidewall.

It'll be such a waste to use those beautiful wheels in the salt and snow.

It'll sure look good though!!!!

I use my multispokes in the winter without any issues.
I don't see any difference between using 18" and 19" in the winter (I've used both).

Off topic.. every time you post pics of your car.. I want to fly over there and smack you up side the head (out of jealousy), then take your car home with me..

I'm weird.. I really do like station wagons/estate vehicles.

Back on topic. for snow, go with the narrowest tire you can safely mount, you want to cut into the snow, not ride on top of it.

Looks amazing. What tires/sizes are you running on your winter setup?

Thanks It's a pity North America doesn't get the estate C63.

I should've went with F 235/35/19 and R 255/30/19 but I'm weird and got 275/30/19 in the back

It will be fine. I'm not a fan of the square setup - I say go staggered stock 19" OEM sizes. How often are you actually running on snowy roads in Toronto anyway? The extra meat in the back helps quite a bit on dry cold roads.

I run a stock 18" staggered setup in the winter and it is great.

I would just sell these 19 multispokes to someone in the US and buy a set of winter wheels....since these wheels are high demand in the US hahaha

Yep, I've been running an 18" staggered winter setup on my previous BMWs for years and have minimal issues. Looks better and the handling is improved vs running a skinny tire out back.

Hah, nice... 275 winter is just a bit aggressive.

Now onto finding winters in the right sizes... I've been finding that a matched set of 235/35/19 and 255/35/19 had been difficult just based on Tirerack and some other sites.

okay, I PM'ed you pics of my tires - all 4 are matching 235 35 19s on edition1 oem wheels (8.5 x 19 fronts and 9.5 19 rears I believe same as all other w204 19" wheels)

let me know

Tekky, do you have more pictures of the rear tires/ rims? Can not really see from the shadows.

Thanks in advance

C63 T-model with PP, E63s T-model
hey guys, i want to run my 19" multi spoke also with winter tires in winter

I just find out that the size 255/30 19, as OEM on car, there is just one model in that size - Dunlop SP Winter sport 3d.

they are hard to get, almost every eshop dont have them etc, also dont want to find in middle of winter, once will get puncture for example, they are nowhere around, as i am using car daily dont want to wait 2 weeks for one tire

my question is, is possible to use some other size, which will be good in quiet same size, but with more of brands on market and with better availability than those ?

i was thinking 255 35 19, but side wall will be 1,3 mm higher, diameter +25mm whats looks me quiet big,

any suggestion ?

Shouldn't be an issue running 255/35/19, I find the OEM size is very short on sidewall as is. I might even go up a size to 265 depending on the tire options out there.

What brand tire are you looking at in 255/35? At some point I'll need to do some research and figure out what tires to run myself...

I just get some advice from olszowa12 via PM, it looks that I will be going to use:

235/35/19 front and 235/35/19 rear
235/35/19 front and 245/35/19 rear

Matt also suggested other seizes which he tried:

235/35/19 front and 265/30/19 rear
235/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear

just the rear will be looked quiet stretched with 235, so I was told

as it will be use just for winter, not a big deal, on other hand there is plenty tires in that size (235+245 on rear) , so I don’t have to be worried , once get puncture etc I will be waiting for tyre 2 weeks ...

the 255 - there is only one tire over here available: Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D

the best choice for me at this moment for winter looks this one:

I run winter tyres on my OEM black multi-spokes all winter here in Scotland without issues. I also run 275s on the rear. Vredstein Wintrack Xtreme are excellent tyres and usually cheaper over here than Dunlops.

Vise, i've been running blizzaks WS60s on my car (18s) and they were great imo. They have replaced them with the WS70s (they didn't come in the tire sizes I needed when I got them).

I ran 235/40/18 all around on my OEMs 18s. For our Toronto winters, it should be good enough. I never slit out unless I wanted to, and the car's ESC is great for keeping the car in line. I don't have any experience with running 19s but I can only assume you'd get similar results.

Cool, thanks man... think I'm going staggered with likely a 255 or 265 out back. Depends on what options are out there in the right sizes. I'd rather have proper grip for the majority of days (cold but dry) vs sacrificing for those few days with snow. If it is really bad I'll just work from home.

ah. I bought mine for winter performance, not "performance" during winter if you get what i'm saying.

I barely touch the throttle during winter times haha. You might want to look into the performance oriented winter tires then, i think they're LMs or something.

So finally ordered my winter tires today, after some back and forth I decided to go ahead with the original plan to put staggered winters on my 19" AMG multi-spokes. Had a hard time finding the right sizes for the rears so ended up going aggressive similar to Matt (olszowa12)... 235/35/19 and 275/30/19 for rears. I don't drive far for work anymore so wanted the focus to be on on dry handling/performance plus an aggressive look. We'll see how it goes, now debating some spacers too.
