Coolant is all normal, it is an oil issue.. the catch can is not filled but the back of my car is covered with oil that got sprayed from tailpipes. The ECU was scanned for fault codes and there are current and stored codes for cylinder 5 and 8. A compression test and a leak down test are being done next. Both Steve and Speedriven have been on top of the issues

Wouldn't a rich tune be a darker coolored smoke? I run the CLK a little on the rich side to be safe and at times I get a quick puff of a dark smoke. OP said white smoke which would tend to tell me it's water/coolant or oil. The nose test should tell him if it is fuel, coolant or oil. Maybe the sniff test has gone by the wayside LOL, back in the day of 2-stroke motorcycles I relied on the nose test to tell me if I was running a lean or rich mixture lolOriginally Posted by SLS Qatar
Sounds exactley like what my brother had with his SL63. Either your Tune is Rich or the SC isnt installed properly and is causing a vaccum leak through the manifold. dont worry, Steve will fix it for you

Yes, I believe you are correct. Smoke wouldnt be white. It would be a little dark just like we had with our SL when it was running rich.Originally Posted by jrcart

Sounds like it could be valve seals or rings. Originally Posted by Blown63

Did you check the plugs on those two cylinders?

I wonder how many miles were his motor? I have not heard of anyone else having these problems. I wonder if this had anything to do with human error during install? I hope it is just some silly little mistake with no serious damage.Originally Posted by PetroC63

I have 21K miles on my car, I am praying its a silly little mistake too! But does that picture look like it could be something little, I am just asking because I don't know if something little would make oil come out of the exhaust like that? Originally Posted by jrcart

I have never heard of anyone having these or any problems at that either. Trust me I don't want to be the first or even be in this situation to make anyone look bad. Hopefully its all figured out soon and its something minor.

What code is stored for cylinders 5 and 8? They are on 2 different banks. I'm not sure how the cylinders are numbered on a Benz but if 5 and 8 are the back 2 cylinders directly across from one another, I'd be willing to bet the oil is coming from somewhere up top, meaning in the intake tract, and not within the combustion chamber.

, I'm sure its nothing. I really dont think there is anything wrong with your valves. 21000 miles, almost impossible. Plus your having the same misfiring codes we had cylinders 5 and 8. Good luck man!Super Member

1-4 Left
5-8 Right
The codes are P0305, P0308
Blown63, are you also getting P0300,( Random/multipule misfiring)

I hope it's something simple too.
I would like to know what plug #5 and plug #8 look like. My guess is they are covered in oil which will cause a misfire.

could be, but I strongly doubt it. I think there is a leak somewhere causing the engine to hesitate and having random multipule misfires. He could start the engine tomorrw and diffrent cylinders might be misfiring. Only time will tellOriginally Posted by PetroC63

Please keep us updated. I hope it is something that can be resolved relatively easy.

Haha even though I didn't think it was possible to laugh about this situation I can honestly say you scared me for a second

I don't have the codes on hand but I am hoping I will have some sort of update by the end of the day.

Is the smoke coming OUT of the tail pipes or could it just be coming from the back of the car and wind was dragging oil and smoke out the bottom of the car?
If you sprayed oil out your tail pipes you got big problems.
Pull your plugs and check them.
If you have oil out the tail pipes, you have oil in your cylinders, rings, valves or head gasket.
You guys are crazy to run the old head bolts with stage 3, I wouldn't sleep at night for sure.
I hope it's something minor.

Did OP confirm he has the updated headbolts prior to to installing the SC? Hoping it is just something minor.Originally Posted by SLS Qatar
Head bolts replacement is a must. I believe you are correct and one would need to get the ARP ones that Weistec offer. However, the issue here is diffrent. its misfiring at idle and smoke is coming out of the exhust. If the bolts were to fail, shouldnt there be a coolant leak?

I need to ask and find out!Super Member
White smoke, if it IS indeed WHITE smoke, suggests a water/coolant issue?
Surely, if it was an oil issue, then there would be blue smoke?
Cheers, Pickles.

Sythetics will burn white or blueish white. After seeing the photo of the oil drops on the bumper it is pretty safe to assume he was burning oil. I am still convinced this is a blowby or crank case breather related issue. I have had white smoke and exhaust oil blow by on the CLK a year or so back when my crank case breather and catch can got reinstalled inproperly by one of my diesel mechanics that usually works on my semi's. I crapped myself then was releived to find it was just a simply silly mistake that cuased no damage other than costing me a roll of paper towels to clean out my airboxes.Originally Posted by Pickles

A simple leak down test would tell him if it is rings, have they done a leak down? It is a fifteen minute task and should have been one of the first things they checked.

I am waiting to hear back on the leak down test it should have been done yesterday. The compression test showed 7 basically brand new cylinders and 1 (#8) that either had no reading or was very low, I cant remember exactly. Steve also said that the leak down test will give us the best understanding of what is going on.Originally Posted by jrcart

Things like this have to be taken into consideration before going down this path. Whenever you starting modding a car, unforeseen problems can arise. It's just part of the game.

Any word on the leak down test? It is a quick and simple test, 30 minutes tops, should not take two days lol

The only time I had oil coming out of my exhaust was in my 2001 Lightning... and that was because I ventilated the block at the track. Good luck OP, I hope its nothing like that..

Probably not good news. On the positive side, he can have the motor built and turn up the boost.
