Should I change my plates?
Hey guys,
So I just moved back to NYC and I'm wondering if I should change my plates and my DL... Thing is I have tints and I don't really want to put a front plate... so I'm not sure if switching is the best thing to do. What do you guys think?
Thanks

Not sure about NYC.....
But you get a lot of attention here, so i imagine in NYC you would also.
A quick solution to the front plate is getting the bracket that fits in your front tow hook
No drilling holes in bumper

I'd put it off for as long as possible. CA requires you to register your car in 30 days. Not sure about NY. Also, it depends on how long you plan to be around.

Having front plates arent that bad. Just think of it as a protection feature when someone is parking and backs up into your car, they hit your license plate bracket first.
Unless they dont know how to park and back up at a different angle and up your hood/ other sections of your front bumper.

Your tints will definitely get you a lot of attention from the NYPD. If you're doing it to save $$ on insurance, just be aware that that is insurance fraud. If you file any sort of insurance claim with your insurer, they will definitely be taking a second look and possibly deny your claim and coverage. I mount my front plates via the Rho Plate tow hook mount. It's pretty sturdy and can be easily removed.

I'ts probably not legal but here in CA I saw a Porche Turbo owner that made his own motorcycle sized front liscence plate and stuck it on the front with adhesive. It looked much better than a regular sized front plate and it seemed to be working for him.

Nope, not technically legal. I've also seen some folks with euro style plates in the front that are the exact lettering of their actual plate in the back...but still not legal. Looked cool though.

I'm not trying to avoid insurance rate increase... literally the only reason why I don't wanna change the plates is because of the tints... I don't wanna have them removed and I don't feel like being pulled over all the time for it.
I don't work for now, so how would a cop that pulls me over know for how long I've been here?

How long will you be there? Is there an out-of-state address you can use in case they check? When I was in VA, they tried to get me to register in that state. I told them my car was under my father's name and he resides in SC and paid the registration there. That was good enough for them.

^ As long as you have a valid registration in FL and don't have a permanent address in NY I wouldn't worry to much about it. Same with the tint, with the FL tags/reg the rules fall under Florida law.
How dark are your tints? I don't want to say you'll be fine and then you get a ticket for them but I've had tints in NY for 7 years and only 1 ticket which was 5 years ago. I'm also upstate so that could make a difference. Not to mention who knows how large cities are going to respond to civilians after this whole Boston mess gets cleaned up.
Long story short, keep the FL tags and such. IF you get stopped at all you'd probably get away with it once and then I'd go in and change things over to NY tags. FWIW a tint ticket is ~$100 OR you can remove them and you just pay a court fee.

i don't think they can stop you for tint if you have an out of state plate. i was working in ny for a couple months and a guy that worked for me bought a hummer. he had moved from florida a few years before and used his uncle's address in florida for the registration of his car so that he wouldn't have to get a front plate and i think insurance might have been cheaper too. i'd guess that you'd be perfectly fine.

I live in Manhattan, I'm not sure how cops are here comparing to Miami.

Yes, that's why I want to keep the FL tags. They can't pull me over for tints nor for the front license plate. I've seen a cop slowing down and let me pass. I think he wanted to pull me over for a missing front plate before he saw that I was out of state.

also, I didn't realize you can't turn right on red in NYC. I was doing it for a solid 3 months without issue before someone finally told me.

^Has a speeding ticket ever been given out in manhattan? That's an accomplishment.
Watch out for taxi's, they don't care what they hit. Depending on what part of town you are in cops wont really care about tint.

33% isn't too bad. I have 35% and drive in the city everyday and got two tickets in one day and that was it for over two years. But if you get pulled over, you are guaranteed a ticket!

The few places that you can open up your cars top end, NYPD highway patrol camps out there. FDR drive and the Henry Hudson. I have seen more than a few cars get pulled over in manhattan

I was in manhattan as well. I'm like 99% sure they can't pull you over just for tint if you have a FL plate. not sure what happens if you get pulled over for speeding or anything else though.
