C63 owners claiming "too loud" after installing headers
I've been thinking about eventually adding a set of headers to our C63, and have heard a fair amount of people complaining that this makes the car too noisy. I've also noticed that most people with headers also get rid of secondary cats, along with the primary cats that long-tube headers obviously mandate deleting. So if you run high flow cats along with long-tubes, wouldn't this mellow out the sound enough to make it livable? I can hardly imagine properly sized cats becoming much of a restriction on a V8 making well under 600hp anyhow, so I'd definitely be employing them on my Merc. I'm thinking simply adding headers and mid-pipes with cats dumping straight into the factory resonator and the rest of the factory exhaust system, sounds simple and effective to me?

The issue is the mufflers they are like amplifiers. So when you free up all that flow the car gets really loud.
You might want to try a muffler where the resonator goes. Hence a total of 3 mufflers not 3

So I ordered the 18" x 6" x 3" Magnaflow Mufflers and their 3" ID resonated tips. The mufflers are going to require a bit of massaging to get into place and the tips will be welded directly to the muffler outlet when done, but I feel it will be a perfect solution for the excessive noise.
Just watch this video and decide if you want all that noise...

A "dual in" "dual out" muffler may be just the ticket in the place of the resonator. I actually used an arrangement like this on a truck with headers and placed the muffler in place of the X-pipe and it sounded really good.

Dynomax has a X Flow resonator....thinking of getting in put in to cut down drone and noise from long tubes. Need to get measured first to see if it'll fit. It could be viewed as somewhat similar to xpipe but resonated.

This would definitely work in the center section. The internal design is a perforated X-Pipe design.

bring up an old thread... did anyone ever try a 3rd muffler like this in place of where the 2nd cats used to be?
I just got agency power LTH and mid-pipes installed which eliminate both primary and 2nd cats and its like nascar loud now! lol like setting alarms off in the neighborhood loud!
i had long tubes on my E55 and they were no where near this loud
its awesome on the highway, but in the city i'm now that "look at me!" guy lol and i dont wanna be, just want the power lol

Funny my car has MBH headers and catless mids with x-pipe and I don't think it's too loud, it is loud yes but I'd call it perfect
When left in C and driven normally it's hardly more noticeable than stock (aside from startup) yet in S+ with ESP in sport it sounds like a 500+hp car should.

Not true. MBH headers can be installed with (different) primary cats. That goes a long ways towards taming the sound.

i can definitely tell that the back of my exhaust is making it megaphone-ish....
i ordered the supersprint mufflers to see if it will clean it up and quiet it down enough. in case you're wondering - this is what a loud exhaust with no cats looks like:

3 inch and no cats. You can see the back of it where it goes down to 2.5.....
The stock exhaust is just way louder than it should be. Figures though.....to make this car sound good with all that stock restriction, they had to amp it up.

I had the MHP headers with mid sections with no cats which bolted into the rear stock cat-back and it was absolutely annoyingly loud. or the first few weeks I almost stopped driving the car because how loud it was. I had to start the car in the mornings with the cold start and I was waking up my entire family and neighboors so I personally, ethically and morally felt bad about being so loud.
I also found that it was very annoying to drive at full throtle with such intense noise. It sounded like a NASCAR. Just be aware that if you put headers it will get very loud and you might not like it.

I had the problem of my car sounding like a nascar with my longtubes but I recently fixed it by taking out the x-pipe and replacing it with the center muffler and two custom silencers with a balance pipe.
The sound now is amazing. Sounds like the deep amg tone but slightly louder (barely noticeable) the cold starts are wayyyy quiter, just a bit louder then stock. The best part is when I want to, I can open her up (WOT) and she screams like a 500-600+ hp car with long tube headers should. Now I can start my car in the mornings without waking up the neighborhood and I can drive normally with out people running away covering their ears. Also the air flow is not being restricted.
I made a thread a little while ago about this, also two pictures there.

I have yet to make a sound clip but will soon.
