tire wear question (pics)

So I noticed yesterday morning that i have been driving w incredibly unsafe tire conditions. completely disregarding how embarassing this is and the safety aspect, does this wear look weird? i knew the C63 had negative camber but i was pretty shocked to see just how bad that inside lines were on both front tires. they are the OEM contisport 5p. I replaced them with PSS. I got a total of 21k miles on the fronts.

I had the exact same issue. I pinched the right rear on a weird curb, which flattened the tire. When I changed it, I saw that my tire looked just like yours. I'm kinda surprised you're seeing this on the fronts.

I clearly would have had a blowout had I not had the flat. I've since gone to the Michelin PSS and I look at the inside wear on a regular basis.

Regards,

Joe

When I got my alignment after springs, tech told me get new fronts as well. Inside were getting worn out.

I think you need an alignment. I'd sort of expect that from the rears, not the fronts.

That's minor. You're already past the wear bars...

Camber is not adjustable. You'll need some after market parts if you want to add some positive camber to prevent wear like that.

I'm lowered on HR coils and had the same issue. Put in less toe and they wear just fine

+1

OP - There's definitely negative camber on the rears, but I don't think there is any on the fronts. I could be wrong though.

less toe in would cause more inner tire wear.
birds-eye view
/\ front of vehicle pointing. (wears insides) toe out \----/ (wears insides - in a perfect world ideal wear)0 toe |-----| (wears outsides in exetreme cases- but necessary for proper wear from suspension geometry) toe in /----\
all benzs run toe in and use set front toe with the press bar to simulate road force pushing the tires apart at the front. ofcourse you have negative camber in the front aswell. This is why you take your car to a benz dealer to get it aligned, they have the adjustment bolt kits and press bar not to mention the proper specs. Most benz's arent align'd correctly and arent running enough toe in.

Gents,

I have been fighting the same thing through 3 alignments, 6 sets of tires. Even got money back from tirerack for what they said was belt failure on Goodyear asymetrics. Note that my rears wear perfect.6
These tires show the same thing. Perfectly even wear across the whole tire and then massive inside edge wear. And, just the edge.

Last time had the dealer align and no difference. Guess I have to get the pictures up to show you.

Yes that’s right, only Toe adjustment front and rear. Only the early W124, 129, 201 Models had Camber and Caster facility on the front. Even though adjustment on today’s models has become ever more essential with the increasing width and cost of wide profile tires.

At K-MAC we manufacture for virtually every model Mercedes 1968 to 2013 Front Camber and Caster and for the rear Camber (which also includes a rear Toe kit that doubles the existing adjustment range).

They provide precise ongoing adjustment capability (not just one offset position) and no special tools are required to install.

.
I had the same issue on my right front ... never knew it was that worn until I heard it coming apart on the highway (loud tapping sound - rubber hitting the wheel well). It was a GY F1 with ~20k on it (car had ~25k on it).

so, honestly, it looks like this is how the car drives. has anyone had this issue and resolved it from an alignment? the feedback here suggests that this is normal and there is no way around it.

Yes, I need a solution to the front tire wear too. I'm within spec, lowered on H&R springs but the inside of the front tires are gone!

thats not true at all. There are control arm adjustment bolt kits for the front camber and caster on pretty much all models since those listed. The ones listed you used centriics/cam bolts which were alot more precise in adjustment though. the rear however has no adjustment other than toe as mentioned.

What we meant was only the early (123,124,126,129 and 201) had precise front adjustment. Where now OEM is the purchase of a one only position offset bolt. While K-MAC Kits offer precise adjustment and twice the adjustment range.

With the earlier W123 to 201 K-MAC kits for these models also provide twice the adjustment range (and upgrading the bushes at some time)

+1. You are past the wear indicators. And, if you're lowered, it would only exacerbate the wear on the inner side.
