I haven't noticed that before. Is there a setting from the audio menu that might turn those on?? I'm not near my car right now, so I can't try it out myself.

The rear speaker is a coaxial driver with the tweeter in the center of the mid. If you look at the "grille" in the rear door- it's not open mesh.
Scroll over 4 & 5 on the diagram and it will show details.

they are very clever at making covers to hide bolts like srs badges, door handles etc...
look at the new 172 slk the upper radiator grill... the bottom half isnt even open its filled in because the crash bar is behind it. sneaky germans always at work.

The area is part of the door handle housing, which is probably shared across various model ranges. Some may have speakers, some may not. It comes down to parts sharing, and it is a cost effective way for manufacturers to keep costs down. (200000 of 1 part is significantly cheaper than 50000 for a 1 type of handle, 50000 for another type of handle for a different model, etc etc)

Probably the best explanation, most likely speakers are present in elegance model C -class but its so tacky not to have them in the C63. I actually was kind of impressed thinking they were tweets when I first got the car and now I know why the sound sucks so much in the car....

The sound sucks? my system bumps like crazy and actually makes my mirrors and rear view shake...feels like it has a 12inch sub in the back...Maybe try playing with the sound settings?

Nah, those piped-in sounds through the speakers are the domain of the new BMW M cars, although I read recently that Porsche is going the synthesized exhaust note route also (in the new turbos?).

I have no issues with the sound quality to be honest. I do have issues with the quality/features of the head unit though, which is impossible to replace with an aftermarket unit

+1. Part of the reason I'm in a Mercedes is the sound system. Maybe you should compare with some other expensive cars and you'll change your thinking.

Wow, you guys think the C sounds good? Have you heard Acura, Infinity and best of all BMW? These cars sound system far exceeds the C. I am talking speaker quality and sound, not head unit. If you guys think its good, more power to you. Many forum members have stated how the sound in the C is awful. But to each their own...

I think you took our comments out of context. I for one feel that the factory system is not bad, for a factory system. Is it audiophile quality? far from! No doubt there is plenty to improve, and mind you, this is the standard system. I know the new GL, for example, has an upgrade option at ~$7000. On the other hand, the c sounds a lot better than the Bose system in my gtr.
Let's not forget that this is the entry level MB we are discussing and the comments about its sound quality being ok or acceptable is relevant to what is expected from the entry level.

I have the HK system and the sound coming from the rear package shelf speakers is virtually nonexistant. I added an amplified sub to increase the bass.

Because it is good...all my friends have new cars 2007+ and their stock systems all sound out of whack..No base and horrible treble most of them..my sister has a new BMW 3 series and it doesn't even compare to the system in my 63..her's sounds like an old man trying to breathe...Do you have the hardon Kardon logic 7 system? Idk...My system legit thumps and makes the mirrors rattle...I can have it cranked and it doesn't even distort.
