Just to give you an idea of how close these cars are. On the left timeslip I'm driving the M5, car #16. On the right timeslip I'm driving the SL, car #17. 11.933 @ 117.97 in the M5 and 11.944 @ 118.05 in the SL same driver.

Here's the footage. In the races that are tight, you can see the difference a true DCT makes as the SL falls a little with each shift.

The M5 is a tricky beast to launch, but rewarding when you do it right. It doesn't lose traction at launch, but not too far after it. You can see it in the vids as about when it gets to the tree you'll hear the tires start to squeal and the camera starts to shake. That's traction control cutting in and killing your run and that's when the SL can jump ahead. It's most obvious on the very last run in the video. I'm driving and had a good launch and am ahead, then you hear the tires and see the camera bouncing around and I'm done. Traction control cuts throttle and the SL takes off. I only really got it right on 2 runs, though the first run wasn't too bad. The 3rd run in the video and the last run which did not make it on video as the memory card was filled up.

Man you have some serious technical talents there fly2nite! With the camera and computer of course not the driving part LOL...

That' s some amazing video there, how much closer can these cars/drivers get? All launch I guess? When I get back out there I bet you guys could run mine embarrassingly better than I do! Thanks for sharing.

Ha No joke!! I couldn't get a grip on the M5 at all. Like JumpinJim said, it lulls you into a sense of comfort after you launch, then... WHAM have another 200hp, on me! Having never owned a forced induction car, I was not prepared for the onslaught of boost. The SL is a juggernaut, but The M5 is a maniac.

It's definitely all launch. In the videos without M5 wheelspin, it's all down to the shifting. In this run at 0:37 you can see the SL fall behind in quick bursts, which is the shifting. Really interesting to actually visualize the difference a true dual clutch in the M5 makes versus the Benz multi clutch. When will they finally introduce their dual clutch into the entire AMG line??? It's in the new CLA45 and A45 and those are $50,000 vehicles.

The 45 series of AMGs aren't making 660 ft/lbs of torque w/PP though. DCTs just aren't strong enough yet. They're inching up though. The M5 has one and it's a hair over 500 tq, though reports are it's pretty much near its limit.

You are correct. The TSW Interlagos matte black in 18x9.5 ET53 in a 5x112
bolt pattern would work great. They're inexpensive and relatively
light.

Get some Mickey Thompson 265/40/18 to throw on there.

The
cheapest place I found the TSW wheels were at LSD Morotsports:
http://lsdmotorsports.com/prod/901124009032.html

The cheapest for the Mickey Thompson tires were at McCormack Racing:

Fellas we have a set of DR's and wheels on order. Discount Tire was able to price match and order for me yesterday. They will possibly have them by end of the week or early next week. Thanks again for the information!! Just need my center air vent cover back now LOL!

Wow, I'm surprised Discount matched those prices, that's great news. It should start cooling down now a little each week, I think we are looking at mid September for the next trip. We've established what the cars do in the hottest weather, so it will be interesting to see how big a difference the heat makes.

It wasn't bad $20.00 freight per wheel. No freight charges on tires. $16 each to mount and balance. Can't wait to get them on play

Not sure when we'll make our next trip. Looking at sometime in mid Sept and Nov 1st. Might have a tune on the SL for next time out.

It looks like my vacation is all but cancelled next week, so if we have much cooler temps on Friday the 23rd I may be up for it. It would need to be a high of 90 or below to justify going back I think.

The SL63 will be sporting a Kleemann tune for the next outing. Much mayhem to follow.

great... i just got my car back and i figured i could have a chance at a stock sl63... there goes that...

maybe i'll have a chance if you're on some bald street tires and i get some slicks... with all the added torque you will have... it should be difficult to launch

Nice... do they come with hub centric rings to fit or are you getting those separately?

hey jumpinjim... you said there was a c63 with LTs and eurocharged tune locally... who is it? not many that i know of in dallas with this set up... we should have a small meet and drink of our own.

i checked the DA on 8-10-2013 when you guys went... it was about 2700. that's pretty high.

the highest DA i ran in was 2389 in november 2011. i was running low 12.2s @ 116mph on street tires. and that was when i was still learning how to launch properly.
