11k ?! Australian prices are just insane.

You're best bet is to get the parts from the US (www.parts.com).

Did they tell what was the cause of the steering rack failure?
For example a very low drop and 20" rims on low profile tires?

They told me pump failure if you hold full lock too long!! I was stopped at a set of lights, proceeded to turn left and the steering went all hard! I almost hit the island in the middle of the road, I had my 18s on when this happened too. Apparently metal gone through rack aswel.

Those prices are australian from centenary classic Mercedes in Brisbane Qld.

Tomorrow I will look at parts.com

Pump is $750 and rack not much more. If there is metal in it no way it can be reconditioned. These prices are for oem and thatbs sourced in Australia, or even cheaper off online websitesvbut them younave to pay shipping and import duties and gst. Your dealership should be closed down for that blatant attempt to rip your face off, one of the worst cases of overcharging I have ever heard of. PM me if you need more help mate

This would most likely be covered under warranty but you're probably out?

Well, I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. MB is replacing all parts at no cost to me! All I have to pay for is the labour which is about $1000.

Lucky you - 'grats! Some of these higher-profile, higher ticket off-warranty repairs blessed by the mothership must be in part a function of the entirely ridiculous new-car prices you have down there.

My guess is they know its a common problem and probably a faulty part.

Cheaper to fix them as they break rather than recall every car.

After I saw this thread I googled C63 power steering pump failure, looks like you were the first one.
