Simple Laws of Physics - Range Rover > Squid Bike
I say this because most people don't have the sense to act quick enough when they realize they are in trouble. This guy and his family are lucky he was quick witted enough to get them out of harms way.
Did he act in a reckless manor, will he be fined, possibly jailed... who knows, who the hell cares. He and his family are all alive and well. I would sit in jail knowing I saved my family if that's what it came down to.
Good on RR driver! Hero of the day if you ask me! Guys on bikes went looking for trouble, guess what, they found it! Then ignorantly enough, indicted themselves!!!
Having said that, I prefer to see how far the hands can take you if realistic chances are evident. Here, in this case that's not so. Outnumbered and with family, I cant say I fault the RR driver one bit.

If my family was in danger and discharging the gun meant 3 1/2 years, I would glady serve that time.

It was that he left the scene of the accident afterwards, but I was doing too many things at once and I missed the part where he had called the cops.
First off, odds are you have less ammo then there were people around.
Assuming that they do not all scatter when you start shooting, you have far too much group outside of your field of vision, and odds are considering this crowd in NYC, some of them probably were carrying illegally as well. So now you have a shootout with who knows how many people within and out of your field of vision, how many innocent bystanders would have been shot.
I'm not anti gun by any means, but this situation is more akin to a war zone with combatants in every direction and your alone. You and your family would most likely have been seriously wounded or killed. Know when to use force, and when to flee.
This was a flee case.
Agreed.

An off-duty undercover New York City police officer was among the crowd of motorcyclists on the scene as SUV driver Alexian Lien was beaten on Sunday, officials confirmed to ABC News today.
The undercover narcotics cop did not intervene in the beating out of fear that his cover would be blown, sources said.
The cop's identity has not been released by the NYPD. According to officials, the officer notified his superiors days after the incident. He was a motorcyclist who was there on his own time, they said.
The information is part of the ongoing investigation by the NYPD and the Manhattan district attorney into the confrontation and beating that happened Sunday afternoon between a group of 20 to 30 motorcyclists and Lien, caught on video and uploaded to the Internet.
The officer's involvement is also the subject of an Internal Affairs investigation, sources said.

Should've swerved left and right to take more out.
I'm sure they wanted to pull him out of the car along with his wife and child to "talk things out"
I think it would be hilarious if the next motorcycle cruise was closely followed by a huge SUV cruise following behind too lol!
As a biker they give us such a bad name.....
I would have done the same as the Range except if they are trying to pull me out of my car and smash my window in... I am backing up and I will run over ANY one that is in my way when I feel that my life and my family is in danger.
In addition, the NYPD was investigating whether there may have been as many as five off-duty police officers in the sport bike ride that ended with the alleged assault on Lien.

Police were looking into accusations from other riders that there were more officers present.

NY Daily News
Wojchiech Braszczok, 32, who once worked undercover as an Occupy Wall Street protester, now faces charges of gang assault, assault and criminal mischief after Alexian Lien was yanked from behind the wheel of his SUV and pummeled in front of his wife and 2-year-old daughter. The detective has posted bail.

He is now facing 25 years if he is convicted of the charges against him. Sucks to be him. Apparently, rank and file were not there to support this low life!
