It seems like they changed the nomenclature for their cars. Odd numbers are sedans, and even numbers are coupes. i.e. the new 2-series coupe isn't a 1-series coupe anymore.

More horsepower, more torque, lower redline as compared to the outgoing S65 motor.
The new M3/M4 is lighter as well.

It's actually a heavily tweaked version of the N55, but with 2 turbos. Redline is said above 7500rpms: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=893935

The N54 had two turbos.
And I'm pretty sure the new engine shares more in common with the N54 than the N55 but I could be wrong.
Edit: It's primarily derived from the N55, despite the fact that a twin-turbo design has been reimplemented.

I have been waiting for this car to come out for so many years. Glad to say I made the choice of being impatient and getting the c63. Love the body, it's outstanding and beautiful IMO. But the engine....very disappointed. Especially with the torque numbers on the turbos, and the small horsepower jump. AND the redline and high end lack of power. Finally got that off my chest. Woo

All new S55 engine with M5/M6 DCT but shorter final drive … electric power steering, carbon fiber roof, trunk lid (coupe only), driveshaft and strut bar … if the M4 indeed comes in at 3300 lbs … 424hp and 369 ft-lb torque should make it a great performer!

Electric power steering is more efficient because it doesn't drain engine power. My F10 M5 has it … takes a little time to get used to, but I like it … 3 settings for steering: Comfort, sport and sport+ … M3/M4 will have an electronic LSD as well. Not sure if M3/M4 will use energy recovery system, which M5/M6 has.

I noticed that too. But looking through the pics on Topgear's release. It's just an illusion.

I will say this. It's a very striking car. I am also happy with the interior.
