flex disc showing cracks. anyone else had this replaced?
went in to autoscope park cities location in dallas for an oil change and alignment... after all the work was done they informed me that i will probably need to get the flex disc/propeller disc replaced because it was showing signs of cracking...
i have an extended warranty but i'm not sure if this is covered. i'll be asking mercedes about this... but i was wondering if anyone else has had theirs replaced...
i'm at about 69K miles...
i appreciate autoscope letting me know of this when it was just going in for an oil change and an alignment...

It goes between the motor and the torque converter. Think of it as a really lightweight flywheel. It's basically there to have something for the starter to engage upon. It's not really heavy enough to be a flywheel, but it goes in the same spot as a flywheel, and it's only on auto cars.

hmm, i thought the flex discs were what connected the drive shaft to the tranny on one end and the lsd on the other ...

There are two flex disks, one where the propeller shaft connects to the rear differential, and the other where it attaches to the transmission. They are about $100 for each (plus labor). The disks are made or rubber and they are designed to absorb vibrations of the drivetrain, from what I have been told. I replaced these on my 2005 C230 a number of years ago.

The flex discs as mentioned take place of u-joints just more reliable, less vibration and noise.

Did you eventually have the flex discs replaced? Can anybody please help me with the part number for the flex disc?

It is at 78500 miles and cost £165+labour.

Can someone show a picture of what type of cracking we are talking about? I see surface cracks on mine but they look very superficial just curious what a bad one looks like.

Google is your friend....
This one looks in pretty bad shape and if it would break, can't imagine the damage underneath with a flaying shaft

When you stretch my old flex disc, the cracks open up and run fairly deep. Flex discs on any car that is 8+ years plus old with decent mileage (80k+) should get replaced as a maintenance part anyway. Just like the rubber on your wheels, sometimes they need to be changed due to age and not just wear.
