What size winter tires?

What size winter tires?
I'm starting my shopping for winter tires.
Local shop that I trust offers Hakkapelliita 8 studded but they don't have the correct size for the rears. Their suggestion is to use the same size on all four corners.
235/40-18
Will this fit my rear wheels? Is the overall diameter gonna be alright? Anyone knows?

***235/40/18 will fit on all 4 stock AMG rims, I installed a set last friday infact. Just be VERY carful when you put them on that the rear offset ones go in the back, or your rim will touch your brakes.
Mine are 235/40/18 in the front and 255/35/18 in the back on 710 rims.
We do a ton of summer/winter tires here in Calgary, so if anyone needs them mounted/balanced on Hunter Engineering equipment... Shoot me a PM.

Thanks for the info!
It's probably the way I'll go (235 all around) if I can't find Hakka 7 in the right sizes.
My main concern was that the rear wheels were gonna be too large for the 235 tires, but both you and my local shop say it will fit so it puts my mind at ease.

I will be running 235/40/18 all the way around.
For one, a narrower tire will be better in the snow. However, main reason is so that next season I can rotate all the tires. Winter rears will wear quickly on this car and i'll want more than a season out of the tires.

Check what tirerack suggests ! I believe it's 235 all around, maybe 225. A square setup has the double advantage that skinnier tires work a lot better in the snow, and you can rotate the front and rears every season !

Mine are staggered, because I prefer the look. But smaller tires of all the same size in winter is normal, and a fairly good idea (the smaller the tire width the quicker it will sink through snow and grip the road, larger wide tires act as snow shoes, though this is less relevant when you have studded tires). These last few weeks I have been doing 10-20 sets of BMW winter tires, all the 3 series sedan owners are getting 235/40/18 on all four corners.

Very very common for winter tires. You usually want a skinnier tire all around. A wider rear tire isn't needed because in this case it will reduce traction, not increase it.

Yes. Stock rims WILL NOT work for this. As the rears have a more aggressive offset then the fronts, so rears on the front will hit the callipers.

I run a square (i.e., same size tire on each corner) 225/40R18 setup. Last year I used Blizzak LM-32 tires and a square 225/40R18 setup. This combination was stellar.
This year, I decided to experiment with a more dedicated snow/ice tire (as opposed to a performance winter tire) and chose the Dunlop Winter Maxx tires (225/40R18). These tires have also performed very well in treacherous conditions.
