Looks like it has a wide sweeping perspective
But we may sit on a hill in general admission for a practice session
You won't be disappointed
Walk around and watch near a braking zone
You will not believe how fast they slow
TV can't convey it properly

This will give you an idea of the speeds (km/hr to get mph x 0.62, 300 kph = 186 mph)

It looks 160 mph range thru 4-5-6
Fast forvflat turns

Dear God I love those cars. Although the Bianchi thing kind of ruins them a little bit for me now, to tell you the truth. I've got to go to COTA. But I also really liked the looks of the Sochi circuit too; thought it was awesome.

Plus I haven't been to a GP with the new turbo engines so that would be interesting to compare the difference in sound. Those good N/A V8 were just intoxicating...

Oh cool. This year again I think I'll be watching it on TV. Since I've been in the US it will be the 3rd time but frankly due to lack of timing. I always have something scheduled the same week end. I'm a big F1 fan and have managed to go to one wherever the country I live in: Brazil (twice), France,UK (twice), Turkey. But so far US is still missing in my book

I started going to Montreal in the early 90's, only missed a few most recently
The cities come alive so it is a total experience
What do you do that allows you to witk in different countries?
I would say oil/gas but France throws me off?
Brazil and LA make sense for petro

I have had one on-track experience at CoTA but never been a spectator there. From what I have seen here's my take on spectator locations:
Main straight: meh. Fast and straight is of limited interest to me. I'd go elsewhere. The view of pit lane will be somewhat obstructed due to the concrete wall and the relative low stance of the grandstands.
Turn 1: Different perspective of the front straight. Pretty cool to watch them come up the hill to turn 1 but they will disappear instantly as they go over the hill to turn 2. Maybe I'd spend 25% of the race here.
Turns 3,4,5,6: Pretty cool S turns here. High speed, amazing handling, drivers pressuring other drivers to make a mistake. Nice place to be.
Turn 15 Grandstands - You can get a decent view of a larger area of the track I suspect. Another area to watch these cars haul azz all while being stuck to the ground. Good set of corners to be at. I would consider this my main place to me for the race.
I won't be at the F1 race this as year as I am redirecting some $$ for a 3 day CoTA driving event at the end of February. I get to pretend to be a race car driver!!

Watching last years onboard video at f1.com for braking at the back straight
From the time they let off until min speed
The speed trap at that point is 196 or so
~195 mph to 55 mph in ~ 3 to 3.5 sec
4-5 g average
Amazing
Our cars take ~2.7 sec for 60-0 mph at about 1 g

I think they peak around 5-6 g. If they wanted to go higher (which the cars could do with current aero design options, just not utilized) they'd need flight suits akin to high-g inflatable ones used by fighter pilots. They say Jules Bianchi endured 92g during his crash. Horrible. But boy do I love this sport!

But honestly his accident back then most likely would have been
But judging from all reports his was fatal in a sense since he is not really 'living'
Time will tell and we can only hope for a good outcome
Then again look at Schumi
All those races and same outcome bumping his head while skiing slowly
Crazy, no guarantees and life (or death) is random and unpredictable

I highly, highly doubt they'll be a good outcome with Jules, unfortunately. His diffuse axonal injury, 92g, combined mean that the odds are stacked against him. At least they'll be making some rule changes regarding when tractors are on runoff areas, perhaps speed limiters, etc. It shouldn't and probably won't ever happen again. But we'll see, fingers crossed, maybe he and Schumi will pull a miracle - but probably not. Nevertheless, really looking forward to the races and continue to love the sport. Enjoy COTA!

Went to all USGPs at Indy, went to the inaugural one at COTA and Montreal since 89, love my F1!
We were at turn 11 , the hairpin and it was a nice vantage point seeing them come over the crest of hill and heavy brake and flat out the back straight. I wish they would 100 meters but still quite good. Getting in and out from there was quick as was the walk to our seats, a joke compared to Montreal.
Loved the hospitality in Austin too, will go back one day.
Jules, freak accident I suppose but the reality for me is this: he was going way too fast under a double yellow. Sure, he was trying to exploit the double yellows to catch up to the pack but ultimately it will cost him his life. I blame him entirely.
F1 is extremely safe, as Ingenieur pointed out and no over reaction is needed here.

I didn't think they'd realeased anything that showed that Jules was driving too fast for the conditions (yet). I think it's possible. But I don't think it's fair to blame him at this point.

Re: Montreal
We stayed at a B&B across from Beri-UQUAM
A 5 minute walk to the metro
A 5 minute ride to the island
10-15 to our seats at the hairpin
We could be in the room 40-45 minutes after the race ended
We never moved the car once parked
Now if you sit up at turn 1 you have a hump lol
We sat there sometimes
But oh the party! The whole city came alive

He was cookin' too, the video from the rear shows he lifted the tractor
But I don't blame him, if the tractor was not there he probably walks away
He was doing exactly what he wanted
Many don't get that choice at what may be the end

The issue was more aquaplaning at that part of the track. I believe Bianchi's speed on impact was 160 km/h from what I have read, just way way too fast for not only a yellow, but a double yellow.
