Retrofit FL to PFL steering wheel questions

Hi everyone who did the facelifted steering wheel retrofit to their pre-facelifted cars... I got a few questions for you guys.

1) How did you get the right airbag part # , my stealership has different part # for different VIN # ... and it is very pricey. I was told the part # has to start with A204xxxxx to be compatible with our C63. Ebay has tons of airbags, but not sure if they are any good/compatible?

2) I was also told I would need a Star diagnosis to test the airbag system (after the swap) to ensure it's working properly & will deploy in case of impact. Any of you did this? If not, how can we be sure it's working properly for safety purpose? I know we all wish to never use this feature, but if we do it's nice to know it will work as intended.

I really love this mod, but I'm having second thoughts now after learning about what is involved. Look vs safety? Or it's a very safe mod?

Last question is:

3) Am I better just buy a CF pre-facelift steering wheel & re-use my internals/ airbag since it was programmed to work on my car... so it would be plug & play?

Hi Roswell,
Haha, if you like it and prepared to do the right thing then go for it. Yes there is that security concern. You also need the leather airbag cover and and the AMG logo at the bottom of the the steering. Maybe get rid of your HRE wheels and use the funds to replace the steering

Here are some teasers

Do you already know the correct part from the E steering column you need to get the lights too work properly in the steering wheel buttons?

Going to get a CF wheel? How about a leather cover for the airbag?

This can be a nice mod.

You guys are evil lol

Perry, ur interior is my inspiration!

Mort, I don't really need the button to light up.. I just need an airbag, but Matt can't sell me one as it is against the law to ship airbags by air. And my stealership wants a testicule for it & that Star diagnosis got me thinking. I thought the SRS light would be an indication to the new airbag being compatible with the old pre-facelifted cars.

Hey Meng I thought you decided to get a pre_FL steering in CF?
To answer your question when I did my facelift retrofit I did buy one from ebay and kind if trust the guy selling it as I had no part number for it.
Once installed everything was OK. So I guess it was the right one.
I didn't do any tests as you mentioned but my reasoning was if I don't get any error message on the dash it means the airbag is recognized and not faulty .
But you are right a safe way of doing this conversion is to get first the right part number and get it checked by the dealership.

Thx Anthony, yup I almost sealed the deal til I realized how many airbags were available it's almost overwhelming. Lol

I'm not paying dealership premium cuz this mod will cost me 3k$ after all is said & done.. I could buy another set of wheels at that price lol

For those wondering which facelift steering wheel I'm talking about.. Look at this part-out link by Matt & email him about the steering wheel with all internals/hardware.

Plug & play for 2012+ owners who wants to upgrade for the CF steering wheel.

Perry & I can attest Matt is top notch. :P

I see there is quite the debate here going on here
And Perry joined in - nice to see you Perry !

Here is my opinion - just get the facelift steering wheel and stop moaning haha
It's 100x better than the preFL just because of it's shape (flat top and bottom).
And it looks much better too.

Here is the steering wheel Roswell is talking about:

Hi snow much,
I got that from eBay form an Italian site. It is a genuine Mercedes part from a higher Mercedes model.

Matt I will get these guys here to get the steering convert. Remember to to get the leather airbag cover too. I just hate the cheap plastic look of the standard airbag cover. Leather cover is a must and so is the Amg logo insert instead of the stupid "airbag" word.

Have a close look at the steering wheel photo again. It looooooooks so awesome.
Meng sell your HRE wheels. When you are driving your car you can't see the wheels but you can see the steering wheel while you are driving it and you will think "well I love perry's CF wheel and leather airbag cover" LOL
