2010 Irridium Silver MB C63 AMG Sedan
Why are they changing the Mercedes-Benz name...?
They are no longer using the word "Mercedes-Benz" and they are using the name
"Mercedes C63 AMG" now... They are eliminating the word "Benz".
They are creating some sort of sneaky transition. Anyone know whats going on higher up in corporate?

it's actually Mercedes-AMG now
As we've seen with the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, a sub-brand was also created for AMG-tuned products. For example, the new AMG version of the C-Class has been named from Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG to Mercedes-AMG C 63.

2017 Dodge Viper GTC, 2014 C63 AMG (gone), 2014 GL450
The nameplates will be flipped on the back of the cars now.
I think I read it somewhere when they showed off the GT and new C63 to media.

Because the names were getting ridiculously long. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series is a fine example of how crazy it's gotten. That and they wanted to launch Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach as a sub-brand so that the Mercedes-Benz line can use the AMG name in high end non AMG models such as the C450 AMG Sport.

Yep, you are correct. There was a chat session on AMG Private Lounge about three months ago and they explained it. They also touched on all the new names ML being changed to GLE in 2016, discontinuing the CL name and it becoming an S Coupe. A class will consist of GLA suv and CLA car, C class will consist of GLC suv(old GLK), C sedan and a new yet to be announced C coupe and so on and so forth all the way up to the E and S classes. It is a major rebranding and marketing effort.....but if you ask me its really confusing.
Anything that starts with a GL is an SUV, then you have "sizes"
A
C
E
S
So no we know if it's the car or the suv, and what size it is instantly. It might be more confusing for all of us because we are used to the names, but again makes more sense.
The CL, was always just an S class coupe, so S class sedan and S class coupe makes sense.
In the long run, I think it's wiser, only time will tell.

Confusing perhaps to those who have grown familiar with their arcane nomenclature, but great improvement for potential new owners. The existing system was/is really convoluted and you had to work at it to figure it out. C, CL, CLS, CLK . . . All different cars? really? I'm still confused!

I think it's for marketing.
Mercedes-Benz: regular MB car
Mercedes-AMG: performance variation
Mercedes-Maybach: ultra luxury variation
It's easier for new comers to distinguish the line ups as well. As for AMG c63 I think it's only in some European country thingy.

I think once we let go of the "old" names, the new ones make alot more sense.

It is now definitely more straight forward and consistent compared with the past nomenclature, I too as above still have difficulty trying to figure out some of the older model designations.
And rage2 has nailed it with the AMG name being brought forward and more into the picture as there will now be an AMG sport line of variants for new Merc models so as to directly compete (and profit) with the BMW M line and Audi sport lines which they have on most of their model range.
