C63 Allergic to Snow?

As a follow up to my previous thread here, a buddy of mine decided to take a few shots of my newly acquired C63 Coupe!

I actually got stuck before taking these pics lol (too much torque!)...had to push it out...

Nice photos. And congratulations on the new car!

Re: getting stuck in the snow; was the car on summer tires?

With dedicated winter tires (and a judicious right foot), the C63 dispatches of snow quite easily. Only real issue is clearance with deep snow drifts.

I've got the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D which came with the car when I bought it. I'm not planning on driving it in the winter though, I have my Audi A4 Avant as a daily

It snowed again last night! Seems like winter will never leave. I'm patiently waiting for the warmer weather to come so I can start my modding

Coupe is looking good!
I went with michelin x-ice this winter. performed like a champ.

Just to pull from another thread, if you can afford it, I'd get the Mode Carbon Luftstrom diffuser. I think you'll be happy with it.

I've been on Pilot Alpin PA4s all winter. Liking these a lot more than Dunlop Winter Sport 3D or even Blizzak LM-22s.

I have been using Blizzak LM25 on on my BMW 335 with RWD. Have gotten stuck in Chicago 3 times in the past 5 years. The research on Tire Rack rates them a little behind the Blizzak WS50/60 (which my wife used happily on her Jetta years ago).

I will probably go back to Blizzaks for next year.

This and that.
I got stuck on my driveway with Blizzak LM32's a couple of days ago. It was fresh snow, and quite soft. Part of the reason why I wanna get rid of the C now.

All that exhaust dilemma and you wanna sell it now!! Lol

The best winter tires to get are the Nokian Hakkapellitas....try them out!

My experience has been different. Blizzaks, LSD, and throttle modulation never left me stranded all winter.

That's what I've been running for the past 3 winters. I previously had Dunlop Winter Sport 3D and found out that they are more a "cold weather" tires than snow tires.

I live in Quebec city, we had the coldest winter in 125years and I had no problem at all. A regular winter here is 350cm of snow and average temps in the -10c to -15c.

I use Nokian Hakkapellita 8 studded and Wavetrac LSD. I did burn through the rear tires though in only 5months. But I always drive with traction control in either sport or off. Lesson learned, next winter I'll leave the traction control on. It should help me get at least two seasons out of my rear tires. Btw, the front tires look like new.

Judging by the picture, your tires are either really worn or you don't have a LSD meaning you get stuck in a couple inches of snow. Get better tires and a LSD and you'll be just fine.

Thanks g-f.
Everyone should listen to winter driving tips from someone in Quebec City.
They know Real Snow there.
Toronto, where I live, is a joke compared to QC.

I live in Montreal, but can't be as bad as Quebec.

Lol, yeah, everytime I go to Toronto on business trips I appreciate the cold but bearable winter temperature. You do have cold days and snow, but it doesn't really compare with the freezing hell that is QC. Fortunately for you, if you had our kind of weather, the traffic would be horrific.

Leungsta, get a LSD it will make a world of difference. I really appreciate my Wavetrac, it locks even in near zero grip conditions. Most LSD need some grip to be able to lock up (Wavetrac states that they lock up in zero grip condition). Having a LSD is also a good idea on these cars during the warmer months as well. Putting down 450lbs.ft we need all the help we need.

Usually the urban areas are plowed fairly well. Chicago gets some good snow accumulation, but between the plows and salt, it is manageable along highways and major arteries. Not saying we have it as bad as Canada.

Boston was clueless with snow, in and outside the city. So the Blizzak WS60 were the minimum my wife felt comfortable with in the winter.

It is, but not only because of the severity of the winter, but also the fact that (1) we don't mandate snow tires in the winter and there's always some idiot or two with an SUV and all-seasons thinking the laws of physics don't apply to him, and (b) we can't run studded tires.

Having said that, this is my third winter on the OEM Pirelli Winter Sottozeros and they haven't left me stranded yet (will be replacing them with Michelins in the fall). I did get a GLK just in case though.

Yeah i've noticed that the C63 is not as great during the winter time compared to some other vehicles I've driven. I got stuck in a parking lot at about a 4 degree angle with not much snow. Surprisingly, i've noticed that my c63 even slides down my driveway (found out one morning when it slid down onto half of the sidewalk). I'm fairly sure it's my tires and before next winter i will either be buying a reliable set of winter tires or selling the car!!

Can't really blame the car for sliding down your driveway...

If it ended up sliding down your driveway, I honestly don't think the make and model of the car had anythign to do with it. It's all about the coefficient of friction between the tires and the road surface, whatever it may be covered with. If you tried to drive it in the snow on the summers, I am surprised you moved anywhere at all except in the direction of the ground slope and the wind. It's not the car - it's the tires.
