Exclamation Is redlining OUR C63's bad

Today I was on the freeway and decided to downshift in S mode into 3rd gear, well in the process of doing all the multitasking i forgot that i was not in shifting mode therefore redlining my car to the point where the car had to shift it self to 4th gear I want to know if i caused any harm to my engine or if redlining our AMGs is bad .... Is clicking noise normal for our cars too?

The car won't let you harm the engine. Running the car to the redline all the time will cause more wear and tear in the long run. But the car was built to be driven hard. As long as it's properly warmed up first, I wouldn't worry too much. As far as a clicking sound, can you elaborate? It sounds like you might be talking about lifter tick that goes away after the car is warmed up and oil pressure builds.

you good bro... when I roll race someone I just hold left paddle n it drops to the lowest gear and floor it. car will shift itself at redline each gear. short shifting loses races !!

I talked to a couple of mechanics asking them what is that little ticking noise and some say lifters and some say fuel injectors but end of conculsion they state its normal but maybe im not use to these naturally aspirated monsters

Redlining the engine is not bad at all.
It's built for that.

Just a small qualifier... bumping off the redline is not a problem for as long as the oil is up to operating teperature. You just don't want to do it when the oil is too thick to properly flow and lubricate (< 90 C / 200 F).

I tried to find a video of some work I did a few years ago on Chevrolet V8s hitting the limiter. If you watched the brutality happens with the timing belt (or in our case, chains); the crankshaft twist; the camshaft(s); the FEAD; & the unbalance introduced... you would avoid touching the limiter unless you really wanted to test the MB warranty.
For the love of driving tomorrow, show some mechanical empathy.

That is all true and I completely agree. I think the OPs question was whether he had damaged anything by that single incident, to which the probable answer is no - that is, if you happen to hit the limiter on an upshft once in a blue moon (like every four months). Bouncing off the limiter all the time is certainly not healthy and is indeed going to shorten the engine life by a big margin.

Yeah, I don't see a need to go around hitting red all the time.
I only get close when I hold down the left paddle to force a downshift and that never goes redline.

If I was to drag race I'd probably do it though

I used to redline my E550 once a month for fun, after reading this thread I'm terrified to redline.

I redline my car every.single.day.

Keep up on the lube and drive her hard every day. That's how your engine will last.

The safety mechanisms are there so that your pistons don't become intimately acquainted with your valves or the conrods don't snap and punch holes through the side of your block. It certainly doesn't mean that just because the ECU won't let you destroy the engine by pressing the accelerator pedal too far, revving it near redline is without consequences when it comes to longevity and wear and tear. You are still beating the crap out of the motor.

Well I don't drive my car hard all the time, just once or twice a month. Plus I can't be the only one who drives their e550 hard, Right?

E550 has more power than the original E55. My dad drives his pretty spiritedly. It might not be an AMG but it's still a pretty good NA V8...
