Sweet -- feel free to write up your experience in this thread. As this car ages, and becomes cheaper, I think we'll start to see a lot of DIY'ers taking this job on, and this could be an awesome all around thread for them.

Not sure about your cls but the c63 motor is required to be removed for studs due to clearance issues when installing the heads on studs. If you opt not to use the water jackets than the studs can be installed with the heads on. Also studs are not required as the revised headbolts are plenty for a blower.

Who told you that? The head has guide pins that hold it in place. You just drop the suds in. You don't lift the head over pre-installed studs.

Yes that is true. David Lehman from eurocharged recommends the motor to be removed due to the water jackets being used to ensure cleanliness.

The water jacket is a cavity/channel inside the head that coolant flows through. It just so happens the bolt shaft passes through that cavity as well.
Sure, pulling the engine out to work on while it's bolted to a stand will help keep things clean, but it's absolutely NOT necessary.

Your comment doesn't make sense. What does "due to the water jackets being used" mean?

Re: pulling the motor, I'll assume they meant heads, but if the head gasket hasn't been compromised (aka not consuming coolant), the consensus is that you should completely fine replacing one bolt at a time.

No he was saying pull the whole motor out of the car to do the stud replacement not just the heads. Had to do with clearance of studding the block with arp studs to then put the heads on. You would not have clearance to put the studs in and then get the heads over the studs and leave it would n car to do that.

It was likely this guy. https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-amg-w...ml#post7262323
Maybe you just misunderstood or he mislead you. 50:50 on that one lol...

Could be. But it got my attention when he said pretty sure you have to pull the motor I explained to him that others had done the mod in car. It was late in the day when I spoke to him and not sure he was "the guy" to talk to.

Certainly the motor does not need to come up, while true that there is not enough clearance to get the heads onto the studs after the studs are installed, ARP recommends installing the heads first then the studs, so there is no issue there and like others have said, you just put the studs in just like head bolts with the heads on and if you don't have a coolant leak, the heads do not need to come off, you can just do one bolt at a time and replace with a stud.
