Tire Noise or Bearing?

Hey all,

I noticed in the last couple of weeks that my '13 sedan has what sounds like a "whomp, whomp" sort of noise, especially at speeds below 60. I have not abused the car or hit curbs or potholes but the tires have scratched for traction a few times and it's getting worse now that I have over 12k on the car/tires.

My question is: Has anyone else noticed the stock Conti tires getting noisier as they age or could it be a wheel bearing at this low a mileage? As always, thanks in advance for any insight given on this subject.

My guess is it's the tires. I get that noise a lot when the tires get old.

Thanks for your reply maximus. I agree that it's probably the tires. I'm looking at replacing them with PSS 2 size 245 front and probably 265 back on the stock wheels sometime after the new year.

I've got 8 k miles on my original tires and the rears are due for replacement when it comes back out in the spring. I also noticed the tires becoming nosier during the last 1-2 k miles. Also noticed the whomp sound. No vibration just the noise.

Last I checked (several months ago) the PSS' were massively back ordered. It may be a good idea to just grab a set whenever you can, bc who knows if they will sell out again, just a thought. I ended up having to go with the AS3's, which seem to have great wear, but are definitely not as grippy, as was expected. Also, I went 245 in front and will probably go back to 235 as they look a little too beefy. One way to deal with that, of course, is to go with a lower aspect ratio, but I'll prob just go back to the 235.

Thanks odonnks. Yea I'm pretty certain it is the tires. I'm in So. CA so I can drive mine all year as long as the weather is good. I try not to drive it in the rain just because there are so may knuckleheads that will tail gate even in the wet!

Thanks for the heads up maximus. I'm going to check with my tire guy and see what's up with the back order situation. Do the 245 fronts seem "squishy" to you or is it just the way they look? I was planning to go lower aspect ration front and back to compensate for the extra width as I did on a former IS F I owned. Seemed to work out well on that car. Please let me know.

No prob 65fastback. By the way, my sister had a boyfriend with a fastback and I have always liked the look of that Mustang. Is yours stock? Oh yea, the PSS 2 tires.... So those are for the back of course and, as you stated, no problem getting them?

Tires showed up no problems, my fastback was a one owner & bone stock 15 years ago when i got it, The interior is still mostly stock ( has a cage now ), runs high tens and has a N/A 363 small block basic c-4. drive it all the time

Woah! That thing is beautiful. What did you do to make it so quick? You must smoke just about anything that even tries. Very sweet.

Just the looks. I didn't notice any squishiness with street driving. Now that I think about it, I went 245 bc 235 was back ordered. Seems like Michelin had a small back order issue in 2015.

It has a 3.73 rear gear and a 9.5 inch converter that stalls at 4500 rpm. The motor is 11 to 1 comp solid roller cam , heads are ford z-304 & worked over. T&D shaft rockers. Painted it myself witch i am very proud of. I have never raced anyone on the street but many have tried to get my attention for a race, Thats why i bought a c63!
