Exclamation Steering noise, help.

Help please, my car have steering noise.
The noise was while the steering wheel was turned over 90 degrees at low speed, there was a noise sounds like from a antler horn last for just a second, then gone. nothing changed on the steering feeling. What could it be? Maybe someone had this problem?

Check your power steering fluid level. If it's not making the noise anymore wouldn't worry about it.

I had low steering fluid too, although not below min and with no noise.
Use CHF 11S fluid:

I believe OP means it sounds like a humming sound. I had low fluid on a different car, and it made this sound. Went away after topping off.

I had a similar sound, but when my car just turned on....after the delay replaced my entire steering column, they found an article that tied it to a valve...$5 part....$1300 labor, but it did go away after the valve was replaced.

Sorry was trying to look for my dealer paper work but couldn't find it. Its a valve or o-ring where the steering column meets the steering rack.

Basically they had to rip out my entire steering rack to get to it. If you talk to the dealer they should have a technical bulletin on this issue, which is how they fixed mine.

This sound of the steering wheel was again today. The symptom was while the steering wheel was turned over 90 degrees at low speed, there was a noise sounds like from a antler horn for just a second, then gone. nothing changed on the steering feeling. I checked the power steering fluid level, it is good.
Here's a post about a similar problem but I do not know how to solve it!

This is a common issue with W204 and other models.

Google "W204 steering shaft seal"

There is a plastic shim in the steering rack control head causing tolerance issues. I had the same horn noise at times when backing out of driveway or parking spots. Rebuilt the rack control head and haven't had an issue since. There is a LI document for concern. Bring it by the dealer

That is the exact same sound my car had.........so I had to have my car get its 50k service today, and asked about what part was changed to do this...the part that was changed is a Rotary Shaft Seal.

Its was over $1k to replace due to labor, but there is a bulletin out on it, so hopefully you can get it covered

I have your solution.

If this is happening to you or hasn't yet... it eventually will. This is a common issue with all PFL W204's.

The issue is that the rotary/steering shaft seal is not lubricated enough or its using the older formula. The steering seal/washer/shim is exposed enough for it to dry out, wash out with moisture causing friction. When you turn the steering wheel over 90 degrees, the noise is coming from the plastic seal itself rubbing against metal. The sound is usually a hum or an "elk call" type of noise.

You can fix this yourself without replacing the entire steering rack by accessing the (Driver side firewall / Steering column tunnel) #5

Generously lubricate the existing boot / rubber insulator "accordion thing" with the improved grease on both sealing surfaces inside and outside or by injecting WD-40 into the shaft seal itself if you can get to it.

It's expensive as ****. Most people use WD-40 with the same results.

The shaft seal generally looks like this " blue arrow "

I am Paypal ready willing to take your moneys now.

Thanks

On video this noise? On 0:07 sec.
And why is the stain on the cistern lid?

AS mentioned above, the issue is the Rotary Shaft Seal, at least to address the noise.

As mentioned, this fix is over $1k in labor to get fixed at the dealer.

Yes, and no idea. Check your cap and see if its leaking past the threads/seal.

Dealership A that doesn't read TSB - "Replace entire steering rack"

Dealership B that reads the TSB - "Replace the seal, removal and re installation of rack/column"

The problem isn't the seal itself. The main reasons I think why this is happening is that the steering rack/column area is prone to get a lot water kicked up from underneath and it could be that the rubber boot isn't sealed well enough or its loose, torn etc. Factor in how much annual rain fall you get in your region and how often you drive in the rain/snow and this will greatly increase the shaft seal running dry. It also could be the older silicone grease/lubricant used from the factory as well.

Many W204, W212 cars have the same issue since they use many of the same parts. Digging even further... this issue was extremely common with the previous generation W203, W212 cars. This is where the DIY method was first discovered by re-lubricating the seal with "MB Special Grease or equivalent" without removing the rack/column and so far it seems to have solved the issue permanently.
