***Updated list, removed the Michelin Pilot Sport

Looking to possibly switch out my tires and this is what I've come up with. I have 18" wheels. Looking for good all season tires. Any suggestions?

1. Continental ExtremeContact DWS06
2. Continental ControlContact Sport AS
3. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 Plus

 

I am partial to the Michelin pilot super sport but it is summer only and tread life is pretty short, but they are not all season so you should take them off your list.

 

Michelin PSS are not all seasons.

Pilot Sport A/S 3 are great tires for what they are. However, i'd recommend getting summers and winters. All seasons do nothing well.

 

So I live in Texas, so I don't know if its worth buying winter and summer tires honestly.

 

I'm in Houston. It's 25F outside this morning - one of perhaps three days a year that all-seasons would be nice. Down here it makes more sense to just stay on summers.

 

valid point, maybe I should just be looking at summer tires. In that case the Pilot Sports should probably be back on the list. haha

 

Generally 45F is the limit for summers, if you don't have to drive at temps lower than that or can mostly avoid it then you can get away with summers, you will die on snow and ice though on PSS's.

The issue with all season is they are a compromise, so not as good as summer or snow tires, if you like to drive a bit aggressively, the summers will provide a quite a bit more grip than all seasons when the temp is about 45, below that the all seasons will be better, snow tires probably make no sense. Good all seasons will probably be 80-90% performance of summers when warm, so just depends on your driving style and how often it is cold. A lot of the manufacturers will not warranty summers if you drive under 45F and they chunk as the rubber gets very hard when cold.

 

any feedback on the continentals? I might be leaning towards the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06s

 

The Conti ExtremeContact's are good tires, so are Michelin. You really won't notice a difference between the two, or most all season tires, on this car. As others have said, you really are buying the wrong tire. Hell, I had a summer tire on a 1 series through a winter in NY. Wasn't the smartest idea, but never wrecked. And that's in NY... You're in Texas...

By buying an all season tire you are sacrificing a great deal of performance, which is what that car is designed for, for the handful of days you'd have to just slow down a tad and take it easy. You're setting the car up for 10 days out of the year and not the other 350.

In my opinion you removed your best option from the list - Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

Or - Run an all season through the cooler months but put on super sports (or some summer tire) when it's warm.

 

This. I just traveled across the entire US hitting temps as low as 33F in rain. I am a huge proponent of summer/winter tires. PSS did fine in the more sketchy weather. I would never drive PSS in snow or ice, but all seasons are NO SEASONS. Just drive a little more carefully in cold weather with PSS and you will be fine for the few days you have cold weather.

 

I have had them for many years on my C63 and no issues with them. I also live where we occasionally have light snow and the temps drop below freezing. I don't drive the C63 in snow, but my old M3 with DWS works just fine in light snow. Performance is 90% the PSS on hot summer days.

I never had any issues with the Super Sports in cold dry weather either despite people that want you to think they throw off frozen chunks of rubber if you drive on them below 40F (definitely would not try them on snow).

For you, I'd consider the Continental ExtremeContact DW. Much better tread life than the PSS. You don't need a tire that can handle light snow in Texas.

Always great to see this tired old line five times in any thread where someone is considering all seasons....most cars on the road are on all seasons and I doubt Super Sports are making your commute in traffic that much faster.

 

Oh and the "all seasons" that provide a false sense of security are safer/faster? Tests have shown that all seasons perform nearly the same as summer tires in cold or winter conditions. So sacrificing dry performance for no reason makes no sense to me. And PSS are great for commuting since they last forever. My rears lasted 16k including a couple burnouts and quite a bit of hard driving around town.

 

I lived in Dallas for 30 years so I know the weather pattern you are dealing with.

9/10's of the time you'll be okay with a summer tire. I ran MPSS only for the first couple of years of owning the C63. Great tire wet/dry/warm, but absolutely horrible in the occasional Dallas snow. I experimented in the snow once and was defeated by a slight incline.

I had my daughter come get me in my other car that had Pirelli PZero Nero M+S. They were great all around. That car didn't have the power of an AMG but I sure cornered hard on those Pirelli's and they never broke loose. I kept putting set after set on that car for nearly 10 years.

 

Michelin Pilot Super Sport are the best All season tires for this car bottom line.
But it all depends what you want and need out of the tire. The Conti extreme is only ok. The Super sport is by far the better all around tire you will find right now for this car in my opinion.

 

Yep I agree on Pirelli p zero I have tried
Conti extreme , sport , ran p zero on my rs6 they are awesome on my ecu tuned only c63 best grip from launch I have ever had in this car ... rears lasting around 3-4,000 klms , getting 3 -4 rear sets to every front set which is nice for a change 245/265 respectively

 

I wouldn't use those tires in the snow.

 

If you bought this car just to commute then you bought the wrong car. Yeah, true, most cars on the road do have all seasons. And the majority of those come with half the power and 1/3rd the torque. But they are civics and camrys that just get you from A to B and that's it.

Do all seasons work? Yes. Will you still out perform most other cars on the road? Yes. But you're leaving a TON of car out of the picture by settling on all seasons. Tires are what contact the road, they are everything, and I've come to learn that by making the switch to the high end tires and spending the extra couple hundred bucks. Always worth every extra penny.

Also (not you jones) but MPSS are not all season tires. OP had this and corrected it. But others have confused MPSS to be all seasons which they are not. They are a summer tire.

At the end of the day, it just bugs me that people skimp out getting the proper equipment for their car and get positive reinforcement from others to cut corners. Then half the time people offload the car with budget parts, call them OEM/New/Best, and they become the new owners problem.

OP - Get yourself the continental DWS. Those will work just fine and be everything and them some for your commute / driving in the cooler months for Texas. But do yourself a favor and put the pennies away until we warm back up and get yourself on a set of Super Sports. Then just swap as the seasons change. You'll get the best of all worlds doing that.

 

I wouldn't use a C63 in the snow.

 

I used my ex-wife's Challenger SRT 6 speed on Blizzaks in the snow. Most fun snow car ever. Never got stuck even in 9 inches at one point. Drift at will. I think the C63 would be fun in the snow as long as you have an LSD and snow tires

 

I would never use my C63 in the snow. Too much torque. You can drift an 80's Toyota in the snow.

 

None of the tires mentioned are good in the snow. I wouldn't use the Conti's on the track. The super sports are normally very good tires on a heavier car in the wet. The zero's are also pretty good.

 

Lots of people do just that.

 

By the sounds of it, the OP isn't going to track his car so the Continentals may be fine.

So I've made the decision to get the Michelin PSSs. As stated by multiple users on here, 9/10 times I won't require winter/all season tires around Dallas. In the case, that it does snow here, most of Dallas shuts down anyway.. haha.

But I have other cars, with more capable tires, so I probably won't take the C63 out in the snow anyway.

 

Yeah, an entire shift in focus. For a number of years I raced on Hancooks and Coopers (spec tires) in F1600, F2000, ProMazda, etc. They were excellent, so I put Hancooks on my Porsche CS, and they were in turn excellent, and far less expensive than Michelins, Pirellis, Continentals, etc. Has anyone tried them? And yes, the C63 has noticeably more torque that my race cars, but the Hancooks and Coopers gripped remarkably well, were reliable in taking a consistent set, etc. Any thoughts?
