Ml63 w164 brake change

Throwing this in here as the c63 page gets more views than the m class page

Hi guys attempting this tomorrow as i have changed brakes on every car ive owned since i was 16 including a few Europeans like an e46 m3 but never on a Mercedes and nothing as big as the brakes on the ml63 (15 inches i believe it is)

just wondering if anyone has some instructions or tips as ive searched and information is very little especially for the front brakes.

any help would be great

If it is like the c63, nothing really unique that you can't figure out since you have experience.
Replacing rotors or having yours turned?

Funny you ask, rotors are a little on the worn side but unfortunately cant spare enough to change them right now for a few weeks at least and not sure if there's enough meat on there to have them turned. Was contemplating taking them in to a shop to get them done anyway as i think this will greatly improve the performance of the new pads on the old rotors. And if you are wondering whether there is lip on the rotors the answer is yes unfortunately.

i saw a guy on youtube pushing his caliper pistons on his c63 with a screw driver instead of piston pusher/caliper tool, any thoughts on this?

seems like i pushed mine back in with the old brake pad and something a little more stout than a screw driver but they went in easy.
I don't believe in replacing pads and not turning or replacing the rotors. That's kinda like installing new rotors without replacing pads, not very smart.
If the rotors have never been turned before, you should have enough left to turn them and still be in spec

I think it depends on how badly scored your rotors are.
I had all four corners changed about 2 months ago and my tech suggest they were OK and the new pads would bed in ok. He was right.
The thing to keep in mind and I saw this on my W124s is that if the shop doesn't cut them slowly they get a heat history set into them on the lathe and the minute you use the brakes hard enough to heat them up and release that set from overheating in the turning the rotor will warp.

I definitely agree with replacing rotors with pads and vice versa but im up for almost $1600 in rotors alone here in Australia. And with all my recent repair bills and now a leaky airmatic shock theres just no room for them in the budget.

fingers crossed when i get them into the workshop tomorrow there is enough meat on them

I agree on cutting them slowly. I usually cut mine @ .002-.003 a pass

I think "C63" 1-piece front Rotor sharing the same weight with that "Ml63" dimpled Rotor,

despite, "Ml63" comes with (390mm)..!

that may considering about the Rotor Hat height..?!?

*C63 Rotor Hat is (64.5mm) VS (55.1mm) Ml63 Rotor Hat..!!

Here is a DIY for the GL which I am going to assume with no research is similar to the ML.

https://mbworld.org/forums/gl-class-...kes-front.html

Here is one for the C63 style big AMG calipers, but I don't think these are the ones you have on that car?
