Oil leak(s)
Hi everyone! Been a member since 2013 when I had the 2012 C250. Disappeared for a while and just re-logged in today. I recently swapped my C250 (100K miles) to a used 2012 C63 AMG (with 60K Miles). Frankly, I love this car. But I found a couple of oil leaks. Both valve cover gaskets are leaking... and dripping on my exhaust pipes which gives me the burning smell in and out of the cabin. I received a service quote from an independent MB repair shop. $740 to replace both valve cover gaskets... and “cam” seals? Is the price for this work about right? And replacing the cam seals necessary? I got another quote from a different shop: $640 just to replace the valve cover gaskets and never heard of cam seal replacement. Need any of your inputs, please. Thank you!

Are you handy with tools? The valve cover gasket doesn’t look to be too hard. A normal person should be able to do both in 2 hours tops. As far as cam seals, I don’t think I’ve heard of those. When I did my headbolts and the heads were completely off, I don’t remember those being on the invoice.

I can check on my invoice later to see if cam seals were mentioned.

2010 C300 4MATIC........ 2011 C63 AMG.............. 2015 CLS400 4MATIC.....
I have a small cam seal leak on my c300. Wouldnt be suprised if it was the same on the C63.
It shouldnt be too hard to fix.

Probably is... but I ain’t got the tools, time and space for it. I think the mechanic has to open up the valve covers to get to them cam seals. That’s why he wants to get it done along with the valve cover gaskets.

That makes sense. When I hear "cam seals" I think of the seals like on a 2JZ since the cams stick out of the front of the valve cover and the cam gears can be seen while the engine is running if you have the plastic covers off.

I had an oil leak from the drivers side valve cover, so I had both valve covers replaced, but the leak returned.
Turns out that the cam adjusters gasket were leaking too. So I had those replaced, at I paid $450 total.
That was at Benz Elite Automotive in Fairfax,VA. Last week, they were replacing a W205 C63 throttle bodies with larger actuators.
I assume, that the owner wanted more air flow which equals more horsepower, as he also had larger injectors too.
