probably air trapped in the hydraulic lifters it should go once the engine warms up and oil pressure comes up to purge the air out.

had lifters and camshafts replaced which has stopped it mostly. Still does it cold but goes away once up to temp.

i read somewhere that it getting the rpm over 2500-3000 for a bit will help to build pressure and this seems to work for me. When the motor is off some of the valves will be in the open position which would allow for the oil to drain out the lifter and air to come in which explains why it makes that noise when it’s cold. Those are my thoughts on it anyway

Hey guys,

Im hearing the same or similar sound. 2014 507 sedan, 123,000kms. It only happens when driving, typically low speed, only when on throttle and typically gets a little quieter as the car warms up. I've tried slowly revving it up in the driveway but I can't hear it in Park or Neutral. Got me wondering if its transmission related.

I only picked it up a couple weeks ago but in that time, I have changed oil, trans and diff fluid, plugs, coils and filters. None of these services have made a difference.

Any thoughts?

Sounds exactly like what mine does when it is cold. It only makes the noise under load and between about 1200 - 2000 rpm. Mine has done about the same mileage. Mercedes Benz have pulled it apart and put it all back together when they did the camshafts and lifters and nothing really changed in that regard.
These engines have hydraulic lifters which get air in them and the noise you're probably hearing is the sound of the lifters bouncing around due to the air pocket.

The internet suggests that this is a normal thing for engines with hydraulic lifters. Apparently changing oil types can help, can't remember which exactly something like semi synthetic vs full synthetic.

Did you use a different grade oil with the oil change? If so this could be a possible cause to the noise as Anthraxnz mentions with semi and full synthetic oils. In all cases it should be a specific recommended oil only.

I have a video with a similar sound, I noticed the dipstick for my car is about half way between the middle and top notch, will add about half a liter of oil to experiment. Oil change coming up in a couple hundred miles i will be using liqui-moly molygen, I’ll report back.

check your dipstick. It takes 1L of oil from the middle to the top marker. I added the oil to proper level started up next chilly morning and sound is 99% gone. Now it sounds like normal engine sound without the tractor.

I have a Huawei p20 pro and when I listen to it on my phone I am able to hear it, but thats probably because I know what to listen to
Please don't do anything to the car. If you add oil or top it off; The dealer will/might say "looks fine to me'. Get it back to the dealer in the exact condition they left it with you. Make sure to watch your oil pressure guage if you choose to dive it back . If you check the oil on a flat surface and it is only a quart low.. Just don't fill it or overreact.Drive it as is if the dealer is only a few miles; or get a tow into the dealer the day after they replaced some oil seals. THAT will make a huge impression with the service manager. And customers. The service manager will say 'Get John on this car..I want his opinion of Sam's work yesterday and make sure this car is 100%". They could have improperly installed a seal and it could do all kind kinds of bad stuff. So, make M/B fix it as is. That way they can track what happened. You deserve a 100% fixed car. Especially at their prices, and I am sure your insurance will cover the tow or your warranty.

Sounds like top end to me but that's what I thought the time it turned out to be a loose exhaust clamp... until I got out of the car and listened with the hood open I had no idea.
Or a Motor Mount, which is easy to diagnose. Put it in Drive with the brakes on put in D znd accelerate. The engine will move up and down. That would cause all kinds of noises.

Well I just changed to 5w40 regarding what my mechanics told me. But then I put an additive for lifters and all works fine now.
