AMG M156 Experience
Good day,
I know this is the c63 thread.
I'm here to discuss the M156 engine in general found in our 63's
as this forum has the most activity.
Currently own a W164 ML63 and a W219 CLS63.
The ML was bought as a non runner
I rebuild the M156 engine in the ML that had a shattered piston on cylinder#7 caused by detonation. Only replaced the one broken piston and not all as that would not have made financial sense.
The piston on cylinder#8 detonated after 3 months...
Bought the CLS (accident damaged) as a donar.
This is my current project. 😷
Got some nice headers and BMC filters from the CLS.
I have one question through:
Will I need a ecu tune for these upgrades.
It would be nice if I could get a Rev match (Throttle blip) tune but searching the MBworld forums I could only find a place in Sydney Australia that does this...
Anyone that has any questions about my current project are free to ask me anything

Nice work and welcome to the C63 forum. The Bosch ecu will compensate for the air filter and headers to a certain extent but to maximize the gains from these mods, a tune is recommended. Since you are mechanically incline and looks like you do your own work, I would look into using HP Tuners to tune your motor. You'll have to buy the MPVI2 scanner unit (`$300) and 8 credits (~$400), but with this scanner, you'll be able to datalog all the engine parameters and write unlimited tune files for the licensed vehicle. If you know how to tune vehicles with adjusting the fuel and ignition timing maps, then you'll know how to use this software as the interface is pretty straight forward.

Injector on cyl7 was bad. Also catalytic converter on left was clogged up. Possible Piston no.8 had a crack from detonation prior and when the temperature raised enough it finally succumb to.

Notice coolant pump passage on timing chain cover of CLS
Timing chain cover from ML. Looks way better... Going to swap them and fit new seals, gaskets and sealant
Some goodies that I had shipped to me from rmeuro . x8 New Injectors. new intake and exhaust gaskets. New oil filter. New Oil pump that I ordered on ebay.
I'll post more pictures in the next few days. Head bolts etc.

Some information on why I'm not just swapping the 2 engines. There are a few minor differences like the sump's, Oil pump and chain length.
Timing chain case cover on ML has one extra Pulley compared to the CLS
