Spark Plug Change

Hi, took the vehicle (2013) in for service to my local dealer BH Benz) for service B2. The car only has 27,500 miles on it. They are stating that the spark plugs are in poor condition and need to be changed and quoting $almost $1,200 for the service. Seems high and given the low mileage should the plugs even need to be replaced this early?

Seems high, but I did my plugs as 60k myself in under 1.5hrs for just the price of the plugs.

^This. Don't you dare pay those *******s $1,200 for something my 10yr old daughter can do in a couple of hours!

Just did mine a month or so back and it wasn't bad at all. Just some intake stuff in the way so it takes time to get access and put everything back, but I recommend a universal joint (or wobble extension) for some of the tight spots back by the firewall. Oh, and my car has about 33k on the clock and probably didn't need it but I figured what the hell. Didn't notice much difference afterward, maybe a couple mpg's if any.

Did they actually pull the plugs and look? If not, they probably bs’ing you. Plugs are normally changed at 60K miles interval. And like others previously stated, it’s a very straight forward job to do on your own.

For that price you can fly me from Canada to your location in the US, we can pick up the plugs, buy a case of beer on the way back to your garage, change out the plugs, go to the strippers, and I fly back home. I’m free this weekend lmk.

Just wondering how they came up with that number.

Plugs are 100 bucks max and 1100 labor? 225 per hour at 5 hours?

I would run away and like others said can easily be done at home in about an hour.

My plugs are due, and was quoted $600 at the dealer, and I thought was outrageous... But $1200!?

Once the new plugs are in, use torque wrench to tighten the plugs, many over tighten them.

22NM but not that important on m156. All the new DI engines have to have the plugs torqued to spec to clock them correctly.

The top of the WIS Article says "for the M156 in 204 and 212", so if you have an M156 in a different platform and you're reading this, it may not apply to you.
I checked this spec for the pfl sedan and for the fl coupe and Black series.

Here's an example of what happens on a different platform with plugs torqued incorrectly:
Microcracks develop around the spark plug holes. The engine still runs, probably with full compression for quite some time, but why not avoid this, by using the proper torque.

Alfa Romeo of the 90's had to have the plugs clocked, especially the Spider. So they used a specialty plug by a company called Golden Lodge.

Once you used these, you didn't have to clock anymore. They became the factory plug at one point.

If your paying $1200 to change spark plugs then you deserve to be robbed. That is an average of $138 per plug.
People tend to forget just because it's an AMG, doesn't mean that you can't do you own maintenance if your inclined.

torquing to spec does not mean you are indexing your plugs. indexing of plugs will require shims to adjust the angle of the plug once fully seated to proper torque spec.
