M156 engine noise that I've never heard before
Hey guys
I know it's an E63, but it's a m156, and you guys are a lot more active in terms of m156 issues than the w212 section.
Was curious if you guys had any insight on this noise. I've had the car for ~4 years now, has been excellent. Have only taken it to a dealer once for a TCM issue. 171k miles now.
I pulled my valve covers, cams and lifters look pretty impressive. First owner was religious about oil changes every 5k miles and so am I, so that probably helps.
I'm waiting on the cam tool to come in to pull the covers back off. I'm not driving the car, but I did crank it today ( first time since the video) and guess what... Sounded perfect. No adjuster rattle, no bad idle noise like in the beginning of the video.
But then after 10 solid minutes of smooth, healthy idling, the idle dropped a tiny bit, and the bad noise came out from hiding for 2 little 1-2 second blips. Then back to normal. I revved it lightly a few more times, all good, then shut it off.
I noticed that when the noise appears, revving the engine slightly makes it go away
I *think* (and I'm no expert) that maybe one or more cam adjuster is completely failing? But not to the point where I'm getting an engine light?
What do you guys think?
Anyways, not driving it until I fix it. This car has treated me entirely too well for me to just drive it 'til it blows
Any help would be greatly appreciated. You don't realize how much you like these cars until you can't drive them...

Sounds like the adjuster(s) is taking a **** on passenger side. The fact that when you revved it and it went away suspects it’s getting lazy. If you removed the cover and look at cams and valve buckets and everything checks out. The only culprit is adjusters.

That sounds terrible sorry. Think it’s a completely failed adjuster too.

Well guys, to anyone interested.... Guess what the noise was?
Alternator! Replaced it with a brand new one and flipped the pins in the passenger bank adjusters, no noises so far. Car is running great. I'm a happy guy

Having some weird noise on idle. Knock knock knock comes and goes
Hey man. So I started heating this knock knock knock noise on idle somewhere on top I think, then it goes away. It is intermittent. Such so it's hard to catch on video. I've had the head bolts and lifters done about 40k miles ago. I have ab 146k on it now. Any ideas? It sounds like the lifter to me
you said they looked impressive? What do you mean? And 5k mile oil change intervals is more than I would suggest, shoot for 3-4K tops imo

I heard the adjuster rattle at the very beginning of the engine start. Mine sounds like that randomly but the rattle lasts about half a second longer. I opened both valve covers and it seems to be my passengers side exhaust. I'll get around to changing it at some point. I'm doing oil changes every 3-4k as well. My lobes look really good for 70k.

Just moved back to LA from Seattle and have a similar noise after the road trip. Hoping mine is a similar issue. (fingers x'd)
How did you determine it was the alternator?
Mine sounds similar, from all the cars/trucks/bikes I've worked on mine sounds like a failed tensioner pully bearing (but could also be the alternator bearing).
Also no CEL.

Good info coming. I've had some odd sounds coming from my M156 and inconsistent voltages. Appreciate the update and time to pull my alternator.

Quick update,,, ,this actually turned out to be a bad belt tensioner bearing... bearing blew up about a mile from my house, shredding the thermostat coolant plastic pipe... easy tow.
Lots to replace. :|
Replacing all the belt bearings, new belt, new thermostat, also replacing the coolant reservoir as mine had a brittle spot.
Looking to get another porsche for the misses so may be selling the E63 after this, love this car but time for a bit of a change... the g55 will be my daily for now until the parts come in.
