Oil dipstick replacement

My dipstick is twisted. No clue how it happened but just noticed after owning the car for a year.

Trying to purchase a replacement but every dealership has tried locating but shows discontinued.

I've read that there were some issues with the dipstick popping out at high RPM which is possibly why they discontinued it but is there a replacement?

Part # 156-010-17-72

My dipstick is twisted like the one pictured here

My dipstick has the same handle as the one on the top of the image but has the level notches like the bottom one.

Yes, I've already scoured the forum for this and didn't find a solution

the bottom one is the revised part. you won't be able to find any previous variation new from the dealer.

Thanks but that thread mentions the same part number I'm looking for.... which is apparently discontinued. I'm looking for a replacement for it.

Dealer no longer carries the latest one (156-010-17-72). Do you know of an alternative other than visiting scrapyards?

i'd be curious to see what the now new updated part will be if the previous is no longer carried. hopefully this means they're fixing the actual measurement as on my W211 it reads 1-1.2 quarts low.

Everything I find is what you see A 15 601 017 72 is no longer available and is the latest part number anything seems to have, I would call the dealer and see what they show if there is a newer part number or how they deal with it, I think by law mercedes has to provide spare parts for 10 years so they have to provide something legally - ECS shows backorderd but most places show discontinued.

in my experience which could be wrong, Mercedes never discontinues parts...they like to keep their vehicles on the road. I needed a module and it was marked discontinued but within 2 weeks one was ordered from Germany and produced specifically for my vehicle since they're VIN specific

Was at the dealership this morning and asked them about a replacement. They simply stated that they don't have any and the parts rep started looking at third party suppliers (rockauto, ebay, amazon, etc..) for stock but I did the same without luck.

The 10 year law you're referring to is, I think, often misinterpreted within the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act. Many people have stated "10 years" from manufacturer date but I don't think the law mentions a set time frame but rather referencing the initial, standard warranty period that covers each new auto. I think the standard warranty on my w204 C class is 4 years/50k miles which pretty much means all M156 motors are now outside of the standard warranty.

meh.....

This is good to know but your module sounds more essential to operate the vehicle than my oil dipstick.

I may just cut the wire part off my dipstick and just keep the plug. whatevs...

The revised dipstick was discontinued for my ML63. I bought a new genuine one from a vendor on eBay.

I'm confused, I just bought one from the dealership, simply ask for a dipstick for your car and they will order it for you. You don't need to tell them the part number, there is only 1 current part number for it as it has been revised numerous times over the years.

I'll Venmo you $10 if you can locate one for a 2014 C63.

i concur...i HIGHLY doubt its not being replaced by a revised part number. my previous comment was to infer that even if something is "discontinued" it really is not. Mercedes has more classic and vintage vehicles on the road today than any other manufacturer, that is deliberate, because they are continuously revising parts to perform better than the last. they still have production or back stock of parts for the 1960 Mercedes SL300...a now multi million dollar vehicle on the used market.

Porsche, also very similar...any part past 20 years is automatically discontinued, but waitlisted. if 10 customers or more request a discontinued part, they will start up a new production run of that part specifically for those customers.

I ran into this issue a few months ago. I was able to purchase through Pelican Parts. They could not find anyone in continental U.S. and reached out to me a let me know they needed to order directly from MB in Germany and would take additional time to deliver. It was the updated part (bottom dipstick in your pics).

Oddly enough it shows no long available on their site.

Blurred suggestion is probably your best option. Call or stop by your local dealership and place order for replacement dipstick and let them figure it out. They have to figure out how to find you a part that will supersede the part number you're looking for.

That's exactly what I did last week and they were stumped. They printed out the part number for me to take and research myself but it's the same part number that's been discontinued per their system.

I'll Venmo $20 to the person who locates the part available for sale.

listed as new. but it has the old style measurement and the new style top? also it's yellow? a parts search shows it's for the S63 and CL63, but I thought all M156 engines use the same part? the part number is 156-010-19-72. this part number has not been discontinued.

I have the below revised dipstick on my E63. Mercedes released a service bulletin, talking about the dipstick being forced out a high RPM's.
So my tech replaced mine back in 2017. But it's the same M156 engine, so search for one using the E63 as a search perimeter.

Is it possible that the length of the dipstick can be different between models even with M156 due to how it's positioned in each engine bay?

i'm honestly not too sure. i'd say if your local dealer has this in stock...bring yours and do a side by side comparison before purchasing. in either case...at least for my situation, the updated part in your original photo which is standard for the C63 reads 1-1.2 quarts too low for my W211 M156. I don't use it for measuring as it is inaccurate and carefully measure the oil I pour into my engine upon each oil change. when my low oil light comes on, similarly i am 1-1.2 quarts too low.

That is a good point, honestly I really don’t know. This would be a question for your dealerships parts department.

Fruitcakes....

It took the dealer a week to get it from Germany for me.

You started the thread October 23 and you found it yesterday so a full month almost of complaining about it being not in stock....

Hey Terry,

Any update or issues upon receiving your order? I just recently broke the top of mine and couldn’t find any replacements available around.

cheers!
