Bought a '12 C63 Black Series - drove 2,500 miles home - many bugs killed.

Well, I don't always make the smartest choices, but for some reason checking off (2) Bucket List items at once based on impulsiveness seemed like a good idea. LOL! So I decided to buy a 2012 C63 AMG Black Series in Seattle, WA and drive home to the north suburbs of Indianapolis, IN last week. I mean, hey, buying one of my dream cars, and doing a cross country multiple day road trip. Why not?

Having previously owned a magnificent 2008 CLK63 AMG Black Series, the prospect of getting the next version and being able to replace my 2007 E63 AMG with a Black Series that had factory rear seats as the new 'family car' seemed brilliant in my mind. So the deal was done, one way flight was booked, and I was on my way to Seattle.

Seeing the car for the first time, all shining under lights in the showroom was surreal. These cars have a 'presence' to them that cannot be described accurately, except to say that you know you are about to experience something very special. Of course, I had to have the appropriate shirt for the occasion.

Delivery day!! Picking up my 2012 C63 AMG Black Series in Bellevue, WA. (7-15-22)

Knowing that there was a long road ahead, I stayed at my friend's house in West Seattle and got a solid rest for the impending drive. Luckily, my buddy volunteered to drive with me for the first day, and I agreed to fly him home from Salt Lake City so that the first 900 miles were a little more fun, and I could share the car and the experience with a long time friend.

Pulling in to Pleasant View, UT to grab some questionable quality BBQ and some fuel I was really beginning to appreciate just what this car really is. A mental health chamber that is absolutely stunning.

Pleasant View, UT - Day 1 fuel stop (7-16-22)

Pleasant View, UT - Day 1 (7-16-22)

Waking up early the next day, I thanked my friend and wished him well on his flight back to Seattle as I settled in for the longest day of the (3) day drive home. Salt Lake City, UT to Omaha, NE was just under 1,000 miles and traversed through the rest of Utah, then Wyoming, and Nebraska. For those of you that may be unaware, neither Wyoming or Nebraska are particularly exciting to drive through. LOL! There was some beautiful scenery for part of the days journey, but it was mostly flat land and hammer down.

Purple Sage, UT (7-17-22)

Nebraska state line. (7-17-22)

Omaha, NE with my buddy's 911 GT3 RS. (7-17-22)

Reaching the Omaha suburbs, I stayed at another friend's house and drooled over his amazing Porsche 911 GT3 RS. We went for a ride, and I considered the possibility of selling a kidney, or my home, and just getting one of these too. They are simply amazing cars, and I understand why they command prices well over $250k.

Day 3 started a bit rough. As I was saying goodbye and thank you to my friend, I started the car and realized the driver side rear tire was almost flat, and had a scant (17) PSI in it. Luckily my buddy is a car guy, and had an air compressor and everything else you could imagine so that I could safely get the car to the Discount Tire just under (5) miles away.

Day 3 - Valve Stem Replacement - Omaha, NE (7-18-22)

Much to my relief, it was just a faulty valve stem, replaced for free by the team there who were certain I was nuts to be driving this car all the way home to Indiana. But, hey, you only live once, right?

I did the Omaha to Indianapolis drive July of last year when I bought a 2014 Diamond White Mercedes E63 AMG-S and drove home. I know....for some reason I can never find the cars I want close to home. During the drive I kicked myself for not stopping at the Iowa 80, which is the world's largest truck stop, and it is amazing everything they have in there. It is huge. I was not going to make the same mistake this time, because I really don't plan to be in Iowa again anytime soon.

Day 3 - Iowa 80 Truck Stop (7-18-22)

Leaving the truck stop and heading home, I turned off the absolutely useless built-in Escort 9500i radar and laser detector because it seemed to go off every (30) seconds for no reason at all. I have no idea why people pay thousands of dollars for a system this crappy. I will likely be removing it from the car entirely. Instead, I hunkered down and used my Uniden R3 and my Waze app to look out for Johnny Law so that I could get home quickly. Fun fact! Did you know that once you cross 145 mph the Waze app stops tracking your speed?

Finally arriving home, many bugs were killed, an untold litany of money was spent on fuel (I did get 21.9 MPG though), and borderline exhausted, I washed my new baby and just stared at her. I still cannot believe I have this wonderful car, but I am looking forward to many more miles and adventures ahead. Get out and drive. These cars are worth it.

Day 3 - Home in Indiana - many bugs killed. (7-18-22)

Best way to get to know your new car! I did similarly a couple of years ago during the first few months of covid so I enjoyed empty roads and flew out to pick up my c63 and drove 1800miles home, picking up a similar "paintjob" along the way. Also, averaged 25mpg over the 2 days but was not exploring the right hand side of the speedo.

LOL! Love the 'bug wrap'.

What part of Toronto are you from? I have family up in Barrie, ON and am up there frequently. Congrats on the new car. I hope you are still loving it. Where did you pick it up?

Nice story. I firmly believe that every new vehicle should be procured from the other side of the country. Did the same when I bought my coupe in 2014. Spent 4 months over that summer driving it back to NYC from Newport Beach. I will say however that there is some great driving in the Black Hills of Wyoming and around Sturgis. And yes, SO MANY bugs killed in the stretch between SD, NE and IA. And they were BIG bugs, took forever to clean off all the guts.

Congrats and welcome to the C63 BS club! Super cool how you documented the entire trip - thanks for sharing. Funny fact, other than my C63 BS yours is the only other one I've ever seen in person. Bummed to see it leave the area but looks like it went to a good home. They are rare whips and as you said, there's a 'presence' about them that is difficult to accurately describe. Enjoy it as they don't make 'em like this anymore.

2014 C63 507 Coupe
Congrats on your new bad a** ride and great road trip. Poor bugs. I have a white 507 that's pretending to be your car, but your use of the word "presence" nails the difference. Really just the perfect execution of a hard core sports coupe. Sorry my beloved 507, you are not this BS.

It appears to be OEM. I found a picture of another online that has it. But I am not 100% sure.

Okay...a little over a month and 3,300 miles with the car, and I am absolutely in love with it. I take it out just for the sake of driving it almost every day. It is just so darn good all the way around. I don't know how people let these cars sit around.

Nicely done getting ample seat time. It'll take me next 4 years to get that many miles on my Black Series. lol I have several cars so its easy to neglect driving some of them. I think I've put a whole 100 miles on my Challenge Stradale this year. hahaha
