Car sitting for 2 years…

Hi guys,

Hope everyone is well.
Due to health issues I have been unable to drive my car. The fuel tank was almost empty when I last drove it and a full service was done.
Is there anything I need to do before I finally take it for a run?

Many thanks 😊

I will take a swing at this. As I battle bad fuel every day, (in my case the marine industry), I would be most concerned about the fuel having phase separated and / or sticking the injectors. Ethanol gas is garbage, (don't get me started). At a minimum, the fuel is now on it's way to "zero octane". I would completely drain the tank and if there is a way to purge the lines, I would do that too. Others here may know if there is a way to disconnect the injectors and purge the fuel lines and fuel rails. In a perfect world you could just run fresh fuel through the fuel pump quickly into a bucket, but I don't know if that's doable with our cars. I would not trust the injectors. They are not very expensive, and they are easy to replace. If one did stick open because in was gummed up, it could flood the cylinder with fuel, hydro lock the motor and destroy it. I would also start with a fresh high quality battery that was fully charged.

Not sure but I'm glad you're feeling better and no better way to enjoy than driving an amg!

I recommend:
Pumping up all the tyres.
Charge or replace the battery.
Replace the remote key batteries.
New Fuel.
Change the brake fluid.
Drain and replace the engine oil and top up fluids.

Depends...
I would highly recommend (torque all bolts/plugs to spec):
  • Pull valve covers off, spray fogging oil over the valves and cams.
  • Pull spark plugs, spray fogging oil into cylinder bore.
  • HAND crank the engine CLOCKWISE a few turns. Spray more fogging oil.
  • Pull fuel pump fuse
  • Turn over engine via key and starter. This will build oil pressure.
  • Put spark plugs back in, put fuse back in.
  • Start normally.
  • Warm up, change oil ASAP with a fresh filter, and clean the plugs.

The idea is to lubricate all friction surfaces, as there is likely very little to no oil coating.

Treat the fuel as noted above.

Hi everyone thank you for the kind words.
my health is still up and down, it’s been a terrible few years and lost my Dad recently too.

i should mention I did leave a trickle charger on the battery.
i removed the gas cap and found some gooey like substance on it, yellow in colour.

Thank you for all the amazing suggestions.

starting with draining the fuel tank, can I use something like this?

Portable Battery Operated Liquid Fuel Siphon Transfer Handy Pump,2.2 Gallons per Min

https://amzn.eu/d/caaS1TI

or is there something better?

Then I just add fresh fuel?
is it safe to hand turn the engine? I’m sure it is it’s just that I have never done that before. Also is fogging oil safe to use in our engines?

thanks for all the help guys 🤍

Guys, it’s a modern car. I left mine sitting for something like 18mos with 1/2 a tank of gas. Throw a couple bottles of BG44K and fresh gas in the tank (I used 100octane). Make sure your fluids are all fresh and topped up, change to new oil and filter with Ceratec. Air up your tires. Charge your battery. Crank it and drive. This thing ain’t a 1927 Studebaker, it’s going to be just fine. You don’t need to remove the valve covers or drain the tank or hand crank the engine lol etc that’s all crazytalk. You’re overthinking this (like I did at first).

Thanks @BLKROKT really appreciate that. The oil and filter were changed 2 years ago but since then driven only about 30 miles. Would it be safe to drive to the dealership about 5 miles away for a service, or do I need to change the oil and filter first?
Also is BG44K ok for use in our cars? My tank is almost empty? So throw a few cans in and fill up with fuel?

Thanks again
