S or non-S?

Hey all,

Looking make the jump from BMW to MB.

My dealer doesn't have exact pricing they can share with me quite yet, but the general consensus is that the C63S will be around $10k more than the non-S?

What's everyone ordering here? Originally I was thinking of getting a non-S and just hopping it up with aftermarket, but I don't want to get the runt of the litter if the norm is to get the S. Re-sale would be a problem...

So S or non-s?

And what's the story with Edition 1? Is that the equivalent of a "launch car" complete with bugs and QC issues?

Thanks in advance.

(oh, I should mention I am in the USA).

Majority of the people are ordering the S
If you've seen the order guide already. It's a no brainer. There is so much that you get for that 7k-10k difference.

They are typically used by dealers as demonstrators of all the different options available. Downside is that they can have teething issues since they are early production marketing tools.

What's the rationale for Edition 1?

Without pricing, it's really hard to zero in on a choice here...

Thanks, again.

The Edition 1, E1 for short on here, are a limited number of vehicles. I worked for BMW so I can relate to your question

All of the E1's come the exact same way in terms of equipment. This is the first E1 where the client or dealership (if not sold) can choose the exterior color. There are 5 color choices for the C63 S E1. If I had to guess, the car will be sub $90k. You can look at the dealer ordering guide (DOG) for additional information on the E1. There are only 380 E1's being produced. Every dealer will get one E1 C63.

Thanks, JP.

So, is it safe to say that one would not be trading a fully sorted vehicle for the privilege of an early delivery? Seems that the E1s are the first cars showing up at the dealers?

Is the E1 concept something that Benz has been doing with other models? If so, does that status tend to help resale at all (seems like a rare car @ 380 examples)?

Between a $62k C63 and a "sub $90k" E1, the pricing spread certainly got broad, but not as bad when comparing an S to an E1, I suppose... Looking for a reason to push me over the edge all the way to E1 land...

Im one of the few here that doesn't the of value in the S model. I would much rather take the 10k or so that I am saving and get a nice set of wheels and go on vacation with rest of the money.

The edition 1 won't be coming first actually. I hear they start coming in July.

You have to come the E1 to a S model. To compare it to a Non S is not right. A E1 package may list for $10k to $15k. However, it does add equipment such as Pano, Lighting Package, Multimedia ect. Does it add value? It can if the car is in demand. If I knew the answer to that; I wouldn't be selling them.

After seeing that poll, I definitely have my sights on an S now, just trying to justify the E1 stretch.

So E1 is a new concept for Benz, no track record there with other models?

All the E1 options besides the interior/seat trims and some minor exterior styling, I could get on an S, if I am reading the DOG correctly.

For the US market, does the S and E1 get a different exhaust as standard equipment vs the C63? The DOG is not clear on that.

(and while I am at it, is there any technical document someone can point me to explaining how Benz ups the power on the S over the base model? I assume, like other German manufacturers, that it is done with more than just a software tweak)

No it is not new for Mercedes. We usually do it on all of our first run cars. The E1 has the AMG Performance Exhaust as part of the car. It is optional of the S and WORTH every penny. The power up is due to Software tuning & the use of Dynamic Engine mounts.

Right first time I heard about the edition 1 was for the W204 C63 coup a couple years ago. Not too sure if there were any E1 before that but this is not a new MB-AMG concept.

I don't think the edition one is actually worth it. Its gonna be 10-15k for cosmetic stuff. If you get the edition 1 you can't get other options. So if you want Heads Up Display you can't add it. I haven't seen it in person (it might be different in person) but the diamond stitched seats don't look good to me. I really really wanted brown leather interior in my next car but freaking MB doesn't have the option. You would think they would considering all the old man colors they have for the exterior.

Based off what my dealership says you'll get far better resale value for a Edition 1. Also Edition 1's usually cost less then a similarly loaded car. For example. A fully loaded CLA 45 costed about 68k without taxes. The Ed1 costed about 64-65k, and it had the same options plus some additional styling cues etc. Only thing with the C63S E1 is that you're missing some options in the U.S since you can't add the HUD etc to it just like Amanuuh stated.

Although currently I'm guessing all or most E1 allocations are already under a customers name so it'd be tough to find a dealership which doesn't have a customer on an allocation.

The US Cars are missing HUD, Ceramic Brakes, and Driver Assistance Package.

HUD and DAP are gadgets. On the other hand CCB are a must if you plan on tracking your car. Well I guess any Ed1 owner willing to upgrade would be able to do a retrofit.

They may get a heart attack if they get the price to retrofit CCB. LOL

lol! Probably but I would expect a cheaper bill than for the actual W204. Unless you have a Black Series which uses the E class rear axle you are looking at $20k-24k for a retrofit. Since CCB is already an option on the W205 C63 we could look at $14k.
Obviously it will be cheaper to have them from the get go. $8k options like the E?

I'd think the option and a retrofit would be considerably cheaper than that as its only the front brakes, the rotors are the biggest cost in a CCB setup at just over $2K each. Full CCB in the E63 S is $8950 so I'd expect half CCB in the C63 S to fall in the $4500-5000 range.
