Carbon Ceramic Brake noise - loud

Got my car back from accident last month and still having issues with brakes. Makes a very loud humming (harmonic), single tone noise. Similar to when you wet your finger and rub on rim of wine glass to get to sing.

Not a single noise from these brakes for first 1400 miles - but ever since accident (rear ended) the front brakes make this terrible loud noise. I get people at intersections turning to stare at the nice car with the very loud squeaky brakes.

Attached are a couple sound bite dumbed down videos of the noise.

The MB body shop (when car was in for repairs) had spayed the entire front end with a water based compound to protect from paint over spray. Was thought the compound was the culprit that perhaps contaminated the pads or rotor. So they replaced both front and the rear brakes.

All was good for about 150 miles and just started doing again this morning...

Anyone else had issues with this sort of noise? This can't be typical of the so called "noise" that these sort of brakes can make. Sounds like a semi truck with bad brakes.

Welcome to the 'joy' of our CCBs.

It was brought up during last year's AMG Private Lounge event; the CCBs are noisy unless heated after they've been bedded in. You can clear out the noise for a little while if you do some hard braking.

Basically the response to the noise from the AMG guys: "You're not driving it hard enough."

You've got the carbon ceramic front brakes?

How long have you had it (miles wise)?

Do you drive in stop and go traffic a lot?

Thanks for the tip - I'll give that a try. I still can't believe how LOUD they can be. That's unacceptable. Appointment to go back to the dealer again on Monday.

Nice to know - thanks! First 1400 miles on mine no problem - then the accident...

The CCB are for track. I don't understand why you get CCB for normal driving. If you have made some research before buying you will have find out about the noise and this applies to any car with CCB that is not driven ones a month on the track.

For some folks, it's probably just a cool thing to have on your car.

Seems unlikely with a rear end accident that you would have brake noise in the front immediately after. Though the spray you mentioned from the body shop could have potentially left some coating on the brakes if they weren't careful.

Since the dealer swap, did it change at all? Did you try braking hard and warming the brakes up yet? Any reduction in noise or going away completely?

We have the same issue when the car is cold, but goes away after a few braking events. Let us know what your experience is now.

Agreed - rear end accident wouldn't affect front brakes - but.. seems too coincidental that it started just a couple miles after the accident.

... anyway so I did some really hard braking last Friday - got brakes really heated up - cooled down, heated up, etc... Noise was gone for about 150 miles. Now it's back to sounding like a school bus again.

I even canceled my MB appointment yesterday too thinking noise was gone.

Anyone else's sound like a school bus with bad brakes?

It is what it is, unfortunately. CCBs are notorious for not liking normal traffic braking, where you're just dragging the brake pads along the disc surface lightly. You are actually braking even lighter BECAUSE the CCBs bite harder; so there's enough 'play' between the disc and the pad such that the harmonics start becoming an issue.

What seems to solve it for me for a short while is blasting the caliper and disc with water to knock off loose residue, then doing some hard braking to heat them up and get a fresh new bit of deposits. Usually then I end up getting a week of noise-free braking before it starts creeping back.

Thanks - I'll try the water blasting trick later today with a pressure washer. I have some equipment to clean anyway.
