Front License plate for c63s Coupe

I just got mine, and was advised to leave the front plate off and just keep it in the car.

Not sure I can do that in my state, but I don't want to have holes drilled either. The bracket they left in my trunk doesn't seem fit to anywhere on the front bumper in any event.

Can any of you post photos of your front plate attachment?

Thanks

I was given a choice by the dealer to put it on or not and decided to leave it at the front. They said they could leave it off but will not take any responsibility as its the law to have it in the front. I just figured its one less reason for a cop to pull you over. They tend to leave you alone for minor stuffs like tint but if you give them a reason to pull you over, they'll right you up for every minor.

Can you send me a photo of what it looks like?

Did they have to drill into the bumper?

Thanks

Thanks for the photo.

That looks like one of those frames goes into the tow hook

I was just curious if anyone out there used the dealer bracket in the center, and if that required drilling into the bumper

Unfortunately dealer's bracket will drill onto your front bumper. I've seen guys just put the front plate by the windshield inside the car but I do not know what your law is. Most cars from dealer will have mounted "drill" plates in the front be it Lamborghini, Maclaren, Bently, etc

All depends on the level of risk you are willing to take. The tow hook plate mount will block some of the sensors on the car, so that's not a good option, and I'm NOT drilling into my front bumper. I live in CA and we're required to have a front plate, but I leave it off and if I ever got a ticket I would put it on with the tow hook mount, get it signed off, then take the plate back off and be on my marry way.

Been a year now and no issues, so, yeah.

I decided to attach the front plate using the dealer's supplied bracket, but with no drilling into the car or the car's bumper.

I drilled 4 holes in the bracket (1 at each end and 2 more about 2 inches toward the center), at the point where it just clears the lower bumper (about 3/4ths of the way down from the top of the bracket). At that point on the bracket, you have behind it a small 1/2 inch horizontal grill, then a lip, and then the larger mesh grill below.

I also used 2 - 14 inch thin black tie plastic straps (cops' "extra handcuffs"), to strap the bracket through those holes to the horizontal grill. Drill the hole slightly larger than the nub at end the of tie strap so when you cinch it up, you can push the tie strap nub through that hole, so as to not interfere with the license plate attachment. It's on there, nice and tight with no movement.

I used a utility knife to cut off the protruded drill points for the dealer in the back of the bracket, as well as the 4 plastic protrusions along the center of the bracket (which would only damage the paint on the bumper anyway when in contact).

The key is to get 4 self tapping screws for the plate, with a head wide enough to accommodate the chrome caps the dealer gives you (with their advertising plate cover), but short enough to not "dig" into the bumper when you screw the plate to the bracket.

When all was done, this put my bracket exactly where it was supposed to be, with no drilling at all into the car or its bumper.

If my State's law ever changes to not require a front plate, I then will simply remove my front plate, cut both tie straps and go back to my nice clean (and undrilled), plate free bumper.

Did you use any kind of protection between the mount and the bumper so it doesn't scratch?

I cut off all protruding tabs, so they don't touch anything.

The bottom license plate screws exit in the recessed 1/2 inch grill area, so no worries there.

For the top 2 screws, I taped felt padding behind them, since even the shortest screws push through and make a hole in that area of the bracket.

As for the outline of the bracket itself, no I didn't add anything.

I will try to upload a photo, if I can figure out how to do it from my i phone
